The Field Engineer blog today meets Diane Clipper who started her career as an Aircraft Technician in the United States Air Force and then transitioned to working on Wind Turbines.  She now runs training programmes for wind turbine technicians both in the USA and in Japan. Diane works for dwpa - Danish Wind Power Academy. What are the skills you took with you when you left the Air Force? The key things I took with me were: Basic electrical skills, Well-developed troubleshooting techniques, Ability to read schematics and The 6Ps (Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance). What’s your typical week like? It takes me to many places around the USA and now I’ve been to Japan twice as well and will be heading back this coming year. We are also upgrading our current training programme so that takes my time, as well as delivering the training in addition to preparing for the next training. What would you say to a woman who is considering working as a Wind Turbine Technician? It is a physically demanding job in terrible weather conditions a lot of the time, so in the end you have got to want it and be interested in the renewable energy technology. I would again just say try it, as you won’t know unless you try. I believe that we are all capable of anything we decide to do. The hard-working people in Renewable Energy continue to inspire me! Had the honor of joining this amazing group of technicians for breakfast last week in Iowa as they were coming off a night shift on a Repower job. In case you don't know, Major Component / Crane work is best scheduled around low-wind windows so the shifts can change often. They all have an inspiring dedication to their careers and expertise in their trade! One of the conversation topics was trust with the crane operator. They all shared their thoughts on the importance of this trust between the technicians and the crane operators; How to build it, the long period of time that it takes to build that trust, and the increased efficiency that can be achieved once that trust is truly in place. Regardless of your job type, years of services, or career position, these social-skills, soft-skills, interpersonal-skills, personal attributes, and intentional communication skills are paramount to achieving entitlement in any work process. And we’re starting with a key role, without which no wind turbine could exist – the Turbine Installation Technician! 🌍💨 Technicians at Omega Wind are responsible for assembling wind turbines from the ground up. Step by step, they construct the entire structure – from preparing components to installing the tower and blades. Working at heights and in varying weather conditions requires precision and determination. ⚙️💪 Our technicians work on a 3/1 rotation system: three weeks of intensive work at sites across Europe, followed by a week of rest at home. 🛫🌍🏡 While spending weeks away from home can be challenging, the breathtaking views they encounter are a unique reward not available to just anyone. 🌅🌄 These challenges and one-of-a-kind experiences attracted Igor Fratczak, who decided to change his career after years of working as a barber. Here’s what he says about swapping scissors for tools: "It was quite a challenge for me, but the engaging atmosphere of the work and the great team made it all worthwhile.
