It was announced today that the headquarters for Green Volt, a joint venture between Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, will be located in Aberdeen. It is expected to create up to 40 direct jobs in the Granite City. Commenting on the announcement, Neil Gordon, chief executive of Global Underwater Hub, highlighted the transformative potential of this development for both the region and the wider UK underwater sector, saying: “The decision to base the Green Volt project HQ in Aberdeen is excellent news for the city, which not only reinforces Aberdeen’s status as a world-renowned subsea centre of excellence, but also promises to create unparalleled opportunities for the UK’s wider subsea supply chain. “The future of floating offshore wind will be defined by the pioneering, innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology that the UK’s subsea supply chain is uniquely equipped to develop and deliver. Strategic investment in port infrastructure is a critical foundation for supporting offshore wind development worldwide. We're delighted to confirm that Venterra Group Director of Marine Advisory, Jeannine Dunne, will be speaking on the panel 'Building Confidence in Port Infrastructure to Deliver Offshore Wind' at tomorrow's Wind Energy Ireland event in Dublin. This discussion will explore how optimised, well-supported ports are essential to offshore wind projects' commercial viability and efficient deployment. Speaking ahead of the event, Jeannine said: “Given the significant scale of investment required, the urgency of building offshore wind farms out of Irish ports cannot be overstated. This is a crucial step to ensure the commercial viability of offshore wind and deliver the lowest electricity price to Irish consumers. To deliver an offshore wind farm, the development process must be optimised at every project step, including the installation strategy for the offshore infrastructure. This requires the offshore components to be stored within an acceptable distance of the wind farm, to ensure that work can be progressed onsite continuously during suitable weather windows. Ports, in addition to their primary function, can also serve as catalysts for other offshore wind and marine-related activities. We have seen hubs develop around ports for activities such as offshore wind logistics and research and development. As we move towards decarbonising other sectors such as pharma, agri-food, and tech, we are now exploring port environments for green energy parks. This presents a vast opportunity for ports in Ireland to generate high-value employment opportunities, particularly in rural and semi-rural locations. However, to fully realise this potential, ports with viable proposals must be supported in finding solutions to funding challenges. Encouraging to see a number of Scottish Renewables’ priorities addressed in the Programme for Government 2024/25 unveiled today. Key commitments include: 🔵 A new Planning Hub to build capacity and improve efficiency in the planning system, aiming to reduce timescales for section 36 and 37 determinations. 🔵 A new planning apprenticeship programme to invest in a pipeline of skilled future planners, accompanied by reforms to the education and skills funding system to make it more responsive to skills priorities. 🔵 A new online investment portal to support the development of a national project pipeline of investment opportunities in supply chains and enabling infrastructure. 🔵 A maintained commitment to provide up to £500 million over five years for the offshore wind supply chain, aiming to leverage at least £1.5 billion of private investment. 🔵 A maintained commitment to bring forward the Heat in Buildings Bill and New Build Heat Standard. As we continue to await the Energy Strategy & Just Transition Plan and Green Industrial Startegy, it is also good to see a commitment from the Scottish Government to fully engage with the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 plans. Look forward to further detail coming forward shortly on planning and skills reform, but absolutely right for the Scottish Government to focus on investment, infrastructure and innovation to support our net-zero ambitions as repeatedly called for by Scottish Renewables. 👷♂️🏭 UK offshore wind industry unveils 'Industrial Growth Plan' to create 10,000 jobs a year, triple supply chain manufacturing and boost UK economy by £25 billion. The UK offshore wind industry already employs 32,000 people and each new large offshore wind farm adds £2-3bn to the economy. Employment is set to rise to over 100,000 by 2030 and investment in new offshore wind projects will create an economic opportunity worth up to £92bn for the UK by 2040. Other countries should use similar models to boost investment and ensure energy technology leadership.

How the world’s biggest offshore wind company was blown off course Denmark’s Ørsted was once seen as a model for how oil and gas giants could go green. Its recent troubles suggest that things may not be so easy Financial Times Rachel Millard As the Danish renewable energy company Ørsted battled to restore its reputation following a bruising year, a rival across the North Sea had the company in its sights. After months of quietly buying Ørsted shares, Norway’s state-owned oil and gas giant Equinor revealed in October that it now had a 10 per cent stake, promising to be a “supportive” shareholder. The move was hardly unusual in Europe’s fiercely competitive energy market. At one level, it was a vote of confidence in Ørsted, whose value has fallen roughly 70 per cent since 2021 amid management mis-steps and a challenging economic backdrop. And it enabled Equinor to continue its own journey towards decarbonisation on the comparative cheap, making up for a slow start. But it spoke volumes that a Norwegian competitor still heavily attached to fossil fuels — the previous year, 20 per cent of Equinor’s investment was in renewables and carbon capture — was buying a chunk of Ørsted, the world’s largest offshore wind company in terms of operational capacity, which had become a proud symbol of Denmark’s transition to low-carbon energy. #windenergy #denmark #energy #renewableenergy #windturbines #environment #equities #powergeneration #electricity

The Crown Estate has initiated a Supply Chain Accelerator to stimulate early-stage investment in the UK offshore wind supply chain. The accelerator is a new GBP 50 million (approximately EUR 58.7 million) fund created to accelerate and de-risk the early-stage development of projects linked to offshore wind. An initial GBP 10 million round of funding is now open for Expressions of Interest for businesses looking to establish UK projects that could support the development of a new UK supply chain capability for floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea. The application process opens formally in mid-June and closes at the end of July. The final announcement will be made in October 2024. Earlier this year, The Crown Estate published research, the Celtic Sea Blueprint, which predicted that 5,300 jobs and a GBP 4.1 billion economic boost could be generated through deploying the first floating offshore wind capacity, that will result from the current leasing Round 5 process, under which leases for up to 4.5 GW of generation capacity will be awarded in the waters off South Wales and South-West England. The research outlined several supply chain development opportunities essential for floating wind farms, including floating platform components, dynamic cables and connections, wet storage infrastructure and facilities, operations and management infrastructure and facilities, and skills transition facilities. The accelerator's first GBP 10 million funding round will target projects addressing these opportunities, offering up to GBP 1 million in matched funding for early-stage development. The Crown Estate said it will look for the option to participate in the capital investment phase. A further GBP 40 million round of funding has been earmarked that could potentially be deployed to support UK projects that meet the opportunities identified by the Industrial Growth Plan, which was launched last month, setting out the actions required to triple offshore wind manufacturing capacity over the next ten years. The UK's offshore wind pipeline grew by 10 GW in 2023 to 93 GW, with the sector producing 49 TWh of electricity last year, according to The Crown Estate's recently published UK Offshore Wind Report 2023. The UK Secretary of State for the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero has granted development consent to Equinor's Sheringham Shoal and Dudgeon Extension Projects off the North Norfolk coast. The projects are extensions to the operational Sheringham Shoal and Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farms, which currently power around 710,000 UK homes. The consent enables the extension projects to double the capacity of the existing wind farms, providing renewable energy to power an additional 785,000 UK homes. With these extensions, Equinor's wind farms in Norfolk will power nearly 1.5 million households. This marks the first time in the #UK that two offshore wind projects under separate ownership have been awarded consent under a shared application which provides the opportunity to combine the development of the two projects. Through a coordinated approach and consultations with local community members, Equinor has sought to develop the extension projects to maximise local benefits and minimise disruption, the developer said. This includes an option in the consent application to utilise an integrated transmission system, as well as separate grid connections for each project, within the same overall onshore footprint. The development has been selected as a Pathfinder project for coordinated offshore transmission development under the UK Government's Offshore Transmission Network Review. During the construction phase, the extension projects are anticipated to support more than 1800 full-time jobs per year across the UK and within East Anglia, generating over GBP 370 million in direct gross value added (GVA) to the East Anglia and UK economy. The projects are also planned to leverage the existing operations and maintenance base at Great Yarmouth, which will continue to serve the operational Sheringham Shoal and Dudgeon wind farms, as well as the new turbines once developed. If there was any doubt about the pace of growth in the wind sector, the UK’s offshore wind sector is preparing for more significant expansion. An Industrial Growth Plan (IGP) has been developed by RenewableUK, the Offshore Wind Industry Council, The Crown Estate and Crown Estate Scotland working in partnership with wider industry. This plan outlines plans to triple offshore wind manufacturing capacity over the next decade, further anchoring the UK as a prominent player in global offshore wind to keep ahead of the chasing pack. Central to the IGP’s success is the acceleration of offshore wind deployment in alignment with UK net zero targets, targeting a capacity of 5-6GW per year. Currently, the UK has the second-largest global pipeline of offshore wind projects, second only to China. Nearly 100GW are in various stages of development; six times the country’s current capacity. The plan addresses supply chain constraints and identifies opportunities for investment in manufacturing. The Crown Estate is establishing a £50 million “Supply Chain Accelerator” to catalyse early-stage investment. This involves an initial £10 million pilot fund to be launched this summer to support supply chain opportunities created through the Celtic Sea Leasing Round 5 and a further £40 million earmarked aligned to the IGP. As energy is one of our key sectors, we are particularly excited about this visit. At KfW IPEX-Bank, we play a significant role in the expansion of offshore wind power. Siemens Gamesa wind turbines are installed in several offshore windfarms that we have helped to finance, such as the Calvados offshore wind farm in Courseulles-sur-Mer, which is now taking shape. The financing was awarded Europe Offshore Wind Deal of the Year 2021 by Project Finance International.
