Lessons Learned In A Hole-Filled Marine Corps Tent: My platoon was on its culminating field exercise at the end of Officer Candidate School (“OCS”). When my tent-mate and I set up our old hole-filled tent in the dark after a long, wet hike in the bone-chilling cold. At the time, my tent-mate was a prior-enlisted Candidate with a simmering aura infused with controlled aggression. He was hard to read due to his natural presence, intense demeanor, and curt personality. During training, he consistently helped me as my injuries worsened, but I was unsure whether he was motivated by pity or empathy. Unquestionably, he flourished in OCS, and candidly, I didn’t, but not for lack of trying. After haphazardly taping holes in our tent to prevent the pummeling rain from coming in, I asked him exasperatedly, “Why do you put up with me?” He immediately glared at me piercingly. The tension in the space became palpable, likely built up from the months of aches, fatigue, and anxiety. He retorted, “Because I know you would do the same for me.” His words were short but profound because I hardly knew him. I lay awake in that hole-filled tent for what felt like an eternity, and I realized… “he’s right.” At the time, I failed to understand he weighed the unconditioned and sincere assistance I gave him and others, which I trivialized. He knew I wanted my peers to thrive even when I couldn’t. He gauged me not for the condition that I “was in” but for the person that “I was.” I learned three things in that hole-filled tent: 1. Our acts have lasting impacts, regardless of how small. 2. Our acts matter, but how we make others feel matters more. 3. Duct tape can fix anything…trust me. Disclosure: I completed 99% of Marine Officer Candidate School but am not a Marine. However, I hold a profound respect for the Corps and its members.

Hooray another study! This time it will fix ALL the ills with the Amphib Fleet and is totally NOT a knee-jerk reaction due to a microscope's lens & recent vetted war-fighting shortfalls. I can see the results now. Verbose Power Points, carefully crafted by master gnomes to blame everyone & everything EXCEPT the folks whom the buck is always supposed to stop with and the antiquated processes still rife in the many aquisition realms, loaded with unnecessarily abstract vernacular from a lexicon few understand. Recommendations will be tepid, skittish; tantamount to a bandaid and will NOT address service core rot and confusion. Then we can look forward to episodic grand dinner theater where each week a specially chosen member of the current Big Navy Star Chamber decends the stairs from Olympus and deigns to point their wizened fingers accusingly and menacingly at certain folks from the "before time." Then a torrent of overpaid, magpie-like consultants, who may or may not have ever actually seen anything Haze Grey and Underway, will gesticulate & chant in unison about the many "shortfalls" they - and only they - were smart enough "uncover." These no-brainers will consist of things like funding, poor maintenance, fuzzy requirements, incoherent strategic vision, lackadaisical work attitudes, ILS / LSA / SMD / QDR drama, supply issues, lack of Navy operated shipyards & the degradation of America's shipbuilding ability in general. Then Congress will demand that some senior uniformed folks appear before them. Some in white will act offended at being questioned before ultimately stamnering a few unintelligible murmors before loudly blaming their aide-de-camp, chief-of-staff, lack of Drag Queen depth, the previous "guy/gal", the rank-and-file, the patriarchy, lack of diversity, and / or the recent solar eclipse before "promising to look into it." Unknowing sacrificial lambs in uniform will then be sent out on the flapping mouth-hole circuit to continue to clutch pearls & feign surprise that our Amphib capability has been slowly hemorrhaging to death for at least the last 15/20 years and that "four or whatever" working ships is not enough. The ensuing post-congressional brohaha will be all the rage for five-days (six if the perpetually offended victim club doesn't start crying about the color & genders of a TV Show cast, Video Game with aesthetically pleasing women, 40-year-old song, an 80's movie sex scene, a 1930s National Geographic issue, Fort / Post namesakes, sexism in the Smurf Villiage or other percieved slight), then it will quietly die down. Most of the Big Navy key players will then quickly and conveniently forget all about all of it and push off the remaining nug-work on their staff so they can get back to concentrating on what is truly important for many of them...: ...Diversity, Equity and Inclusion matters...Righting the wrongs of our forefathers and answering all the important questions not one single person has ever asked...

Foundations, Pillars and Phases - the handy bite size chunks for a ‘How to….row an ocean’ series. This time we pivot into the phases. Without trying to complicate things with PM terminology or military strategy, we used a simple 4 stage phase of; 1. Plan 2. Prepare 3. Execute 4. Exploit These phases are distinct, yet fluid and it’s where the campaign magic begins. For example one of the first phase’s teams’ may enter is planning their physical pillar long before they think about vessel pillar. If we take the physical pillar, you will naturally continue planning training cycles, while executing the current cycle and more than likely exploiting key milestones along the way. For the phase’s to be successful in a team you must align roles and responsibilities while ensuring maintain effective communications throughout. It’s important to recognise that managing the phase’s are dynamic, flexible and interchangeable. Once you begin to master this then it becomes easy to capture the right outputs and where you are within the phase’s cycle. We hope you’ve enjoyed our Foundations, Pillars and Phases mini series. 🎉 Celebrating 80 Years of Service: The Corps That Keeps the Wheels Turning 🎉 80 years ago today, amidst the tumultuous landscape of the Second World War, the Canadian Government gave its nod to the creation of a new corps - an essential force dedicated to repair and maintenance, ensuring that the wheels of a modern army kept turning. While the work might not have always been glamorous, it was undeniably crucial. As a young officer, I had the honor of working alongside these highly motivated technicians. These skilled maintainers weren’t just grease-stained hands; they were the backbone of operational readiness. Their mission? To keep equipment humming, enabling units to fulfill their objectives. But their role extended beyond the workshop. Soldiers and Technicians: A Dual Role These technicians weren’t confined to wrenches and toolboxes alone. When the call came, they were ready to support their comrades in arms. Their motto, “Arte et Marte” (By Skill and By Fighting), encapsulated their dual identity—both skilled artisans and warriors. Esprit de Corps: The Heartbeat of Unity The spirit within the corps was palpable. When we returned from the field, camaraderie filled the air. Bonspiels and sports days became our celebrations—a testament to the bonds forged through shared purpose and dedication. The corps wasn’t just about nuts and bolts; it was about the people who breathed life into its mission. Looking Ahead: 80 More Years The corps has a storied past, but its future shines even brighter.
