On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we want to recognize and celebrate the Tribes that are leading critical land conservation work and campaigning for national monuments. Indigenous people have been essential to the stewardship of land in this country since time immemorial, but too often their voices have been ignored when it comes to how to manage public lands. Despite this, Tribal nations continue to fight for the protection of sacred places and the right to co-steward these places along with the federal government. From the Gulf Coast to the Appalachian Mountains, communities impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton will require hundreds of billions of dollars to clean up and rebuild. However, House Majority Leader Mike Johnson refuses to call Congress back from recess until Nov. 12. We can’t leave people who have lost everything waiting for vital resources and support. This week, North Carolina lawmakers focused on Hurricane Helene relief, passing H149, the Disaster Recovery Act, to provide $273M in aid. Efforts include rebuilding infrastructure, supporting schools, and easing election challenges in affected counties. North Carolina Sierra Club Chapter Director, Chris Herdnon, joined representatives Caleb Rudow and Deb Butler to push for climate action as the state rebuilds from Hurricane Helene. Herndon and Brooks Rainey Pearson, legislative counsel for the Southern Environmental Law Center, highlighted past and pending bills before the state legislature and Congress that can help address the root causes of climate change, and ideas that can help communities recover more strongly.

The role of major banks is critical for ensuring a sustainable future, as the world aims for net-zero by 2050. We cannot solve the climate crisis if they continue with business-as-usual. Unfortunately, the largest US banks – JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citi, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley – still have substantial gaps in implementing their own climate commitments, and stronger action is urgently needed. Key areas for improvement include: 1️⃣ Improving 2030 targets: Expand sectoral emissions targets beyond lending to cover underwriting, and focus on absolute emissions reductions aligned with a 1.5°C pathway. 2️⃣ Strengthening exclusion policies: Go beyond project finance—phase out corporate-level finance for companies expanding fossil fuels. 3️⃣ Enhancing transparency: Banks must provide clearer, more comprehensive disclosures of their emissions and transition plans to back up their net-zero promises. The time for bold, transparent action is now. Financial institutions must act to ensure they are truly part of the solution.
