𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱: 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗕 𝟲𝟳𝟰 – 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵-𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹 – 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲. This bill will provide California’s frontline communities living near refineries with vital information and basic protections needed for their health and safety. Co-sponsored by Earth Justice and East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, SB 674 is a common-sense bill that will provide California’s at-risk fenceline communities with transparency into the toxic pollution entering their neighborhoods.  It gives these under-served communities basic protections they deserve and are legally entitled to. When seeking funding, individuals and organizations within underinvested rural communities and Native nations often need to adopt and adhere to specific language, processes, practices, and measures of success to conform to funder expectations and systems. But what if these systems were flipped? What if these funders—who are, after all, supportive of projects tailored to community needs—learned to understand the language, processes, practices, and priorities of people in those communities? A new report by the Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group focuses on precisely that. The report highlights how two very different organizations—the Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Agency National Environmental Justice Advisory Council—are learning to work in true partnership with the communities they serve.
