"Forever Chemicals" Now Soaking Through Your Skin? New Study Raises Concerns 🧪 In a groundbreaking study published in Environment International yesterday, researchers have revealed alarming findings: 17 PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances), which are described as ’emerging contaminants’ or ‘forever chemicals,’ have been shown to cross the skin barrier and enter the bloodstream. 🔬 Once thought to be incapable of penetrating the skin, these chemicals are utilized widely in commercial and consumer products such as school uniforms, toys, and toiletries because of their ability to repel water and other stains. The present study casts doubt on preconceived notions and emphasizes the critical need for more research on the possible health hazards associated with skin absorption of PFAS. "Forever chemicals": what are PFAS and how can you avoid them? 🚫 PFAS are a family of thousands of human-made substances, nicknamed "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in the environment. They have been widely used since the 1940's in a huge range of everyday consumer products and industrial processes 🚰 Valued for their nonstick and stain-repellent properties, they can be found in food packaging, cosmetics, cookware, waterproof clothing, carpets, mattresses, electronics and fire-fighting foams. So, I hear you ask, "what can I do to avoid PFAS?" It’s hard to avoid PFAS, but experts say there are ways to mitigate your exposure to the man-made chemicals. Tea bags can be health hazards due to #microplastics, chemical contaminants, and bleaching agents. Many tea bags are sprayed with plastic to seal them and improve durability. This plastic can release microplastics into the tea when steeped, posing ingestion risks. Additionally, #pesticides and synthetic #additives in tea bags can leach into the tea, leading to potential health concerns.

PFAS are in everything from clothing 👚 to cookware 🍳 to cosmetics 💄 Banning PFAS in menstrual products is a first step towards reducing our exposure to these harmful substances, which have been linked to cancer and other health hazards. People who menstruate use an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 disposable menstrual products during their lifetime. A huge number of these items include PFAS, but companies aren't required to report this information. We're calling on the BC NDP to take a leadership role in advancing both women's health and environmental sustainability by banning "forever chemicals" (PFAS) in menstrual products.
