The Pocketalk European team had an incredibly productive and insightful trip to Cologne last week, attending didacta 2024 – Germany’s education event. The team enjoyed enriching discussions with educational professionals, discussing language barriers within the German education sector. Christoph Janeba, GM Germany and Business Development, shares his key takeaways here: “Throughout our experience at didcata, a recurring theme surfaced—the significant impact of language barriers on children's ability to navigate the curriculum. Feedback consistently echoed a unanimous sentiment: the effectiveness of solutions increases when they are simplified and scalable, resulting in a quicker and more pronounced positive impact. “In a time of growing diversity, the demand for effective language translation solutions is increasing. Recognising this, it becomes clear that overcoming language barriers is not only essential, but a key enabler for fostering inclusive learning environments. “Addressing language barriers is pivotal for empowering the next generation and enabling teachers to do what they do best. Let's continue working towards an education landscape where language is not a barrier but a bridge to knowledge and invest in tools that adapt to evolving educational needs." 🌐📚 #EducationInsights #EducationInnovation #LanguageTranslation #InclusiveLearning

Circle U. was represented by Fanny Meunier and Benoît Duhouxît Raucent, Directors of the CU.mil and of the CU.til, respectively. Together with colleagues from other alliances, they shared their take on the future of education and language learning in our connected world and outlined some of the accomplishments of alliances in the field of multilingualism. The event was organised jointly by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) and the Rectors’ Council of Universities of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (CRef) within the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and it featured mainly the alliances with a Belgian university among their constituent members, but not only. Topics and takeaways Given the all-encompassing nature of alliances, several topics were in the spotlight, namely multilingualism, inclusion, student and staff mobility, superdiversity in academia and the labour market, pedagogical innovation, the European Degree label and cooperation with partners in the Global South. These were some of the main takeaway messages from the panel on “Future of Education and Language Learning in our Connected World”, where Circle U. took part: Multilingualism should be seen as an asset and not as a barrier. European University Alliances can be regarded as catalysts as they are able to provide the momentum for change. Multilingualism is also a key driver of inclusion: languages are not simply functional tools for communication; knowledge of languages has profound benefits both on individuals and on society at large. Great work has been achieved through small scale initiatives and this really ought to be sustained. To this end, investment must be increased, and adequate resources need to be found in order to increase the educational offer and make sure that what has been developed so far becomes embedded and systemic within higher education institutions. It’s important to invest on activities that foster multilingualism but also on research on multilingualism. Sharing of information and good practices between alliances is crucial towards the circulation of knowledge and development. https://lnkd.in/eFSDT6DB

"Most recently, West Virginia University's decision to ax all foreign language degrees made national headlines. The irony is that many universities are embracing an international mission, opening campuses abroad, recruiting students from other countries, and claiming to prepare citizens of the world." #globaleducation #teachingandlearning #multilingualism #independentschools #boardingschools #studentsuccess #k12education

On September 20th, I presented the findings of a triangular study on the impact of the Intensive English Program (IEP) at a SoTL ISSOTL: International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning summit. In Spring 2024, KSU hosted 17 German students from Joachim Herz Stiftung for a six-week IEP, where we explored the program’s effects on language proficiency, attitudes, behaviors, and intercultural competence (IC) development. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study triangulates data from pre- and post-intervention tests, learners' and instructors' attitudinal survey responses, and focus-group interviews with two participant groups and instructors. After transcribing focus group interviews and analyzing attitudinal surveys and test results over summer, primary investigators Sabine Smith, Jennifer Hoosier and I identified four major themes. As an International Relations major, I focused my research on IC development, presenting the study’s findings, future implications, and limitations at the conference. Preliminary findings, based on mixed-method data, show positive shifts in language skills and intercultural awareness. While the study highlights areas for improvement, it offers insights for sustaining international partnerships and improving program design.
