Pride Month is about acceptance, equality and celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ people. But it isn’t just about the Pride Month flags, the LGBTQ+ Pride Month facts or Pride Month resources because LGBTQ+ inclusion should take place 365 days of the year. Making assumptions on sexuality, gender and sex, based on heteronormative ideas is not acceptable. Our plays share example of unacceptable behaviour at work or school. We work hard to educate, inspire and ignite discussions. Allyship in the workplace is crucial for inclusion and equality. Research shows that having just one strong ally can help reduce the possibility of suicidal thoughts of LGBTQ+ people by 40%. June is not just time for celebration, it’s also a time to raise awareness of issues that might be experienced being part of the LGBTQIA+. Have you ever heard of "rainbow washing"? Rainbow washing is when brands and organizations make a show of discussing LGBTQ+-related topics, usually only during Pride Month, and without making meaningful change in their workplaces to actually support the LGBTQ+ community. It's performative, not real allyship. So how can we make sure we aren't rainbow washing our workplaces? First, we should focus LGBTQ+ issues all year long, not just during Pride Month. Second, we must keep in mind that the LGBTQ+ community is very diverse, which means the types of issues and types of support they might require are also diverse. Finally, and most importantly, we must get feedback from members of the LGBTQ+ community in our workplaces on what support they are lacking, and then make actual change. This includes changes to recruiting and hiring, as well as the actual work environment. And we must get continual feedback from them to make sure that they are included in our workplaces. Pride month is a lot more than rainbow-coloured logos and cupcakes. Stats like the one below show that while immense progress has been made (something to feel real pride about) far too many people still feel as though they cannot fully be themselves at work, nor report instances where they are bullied or made to feel uncomfortable. At Stanton House our amazing People team are working to review our internal policies to make sure procedures are in place to allow people to express who they are, and feel comfortable reporting harassment should it occur. If you want to take action rather than tokenism, actively work within your company to promote an inclusive environment and speak to HR to see if they are also up-to-date with policies that make a real difference to LGBTQ+ workers' everyday lives. Inclusivity doesn't stop when the logo is changed back to normal and the rainbows are put away for another year. #pridemonth #equality
