Did you tune in for the 150th Kentucky Derby? Sigma Nu was well-represented during Saturday’s race. In addition to Brother Larry Connolly’s (Washington & Lee) two horses, Dornoch and Society Man, two other horses that competed in the historic event are owned by alumni from the Gamma Upsilon Chapter (Arkansas). Jerry Caroom is the owner of Track Phantom, and Daniel Banks Hamby is the owner of race winner Mystik Dan (pictured). Stronghold was foaled at Mulholland Springs Farm owned by Gamma Iota alumnus John Mulholland (Kentucky). A Race for the [White] Roses, indeed! #kentuckyderby#sigmanu#legionofhonor

This weekend was the Kentucky Derby, and on the historic 150th running of this race, Mystik Dan delivered a breath-taking win, beating second place Sierra Leone and third place Forever Young in the first three horse photo finish since 1947 ended in a 3-horse photo finish.
This year's race marks a unique milestone with the 150th running of the Derby — the first race took place back in 1875.
There are lots of interesting facts about the Derby, with the drink of the race is the Mint Julep, made with Woodford Reserve as the official bourbon for the race. There wasn’t an official trophy for the race for almost 50 years, the first race was in 1875 and the trophy was created in 1924. To this day the Kentucky Derby trophy is one of the only solid gold trophies in the United States. The fastest Kentucky Derby was run by Secretariat in 1973 (1:59.40). The slowest winning time was run by Kingman in 1891 (2:52.25 for the mile and a half). There have been three fillies to win the race.
I love the Kentucky Derby not only because it’s exciting, but also because it always provides important leadership lessons. Here are a few from the 2024 race:
You can win against all odds.
You just never know.
You can’t stop until the end.
This was an exciting race to watch, and even more interesting doing research on the history of the Derby as well as the winner. In 1954, Roger Bannister ran the very first sub 4-minute mile in the world.
Once Bannister proved it could be done, it was only 46 days later that another runner broke it again...beating Bannister’s time. Just one year later, three runners broke the 4-minute barrier in the SAME race. Since then, more than 1,700 runners have broken a barrier that was once considered beyond reach.
But it gets better...
Before Bannister’s run, people believed that a 4-minute mile may only be possible in perfect conditions; perfect weather, on a particular kind of track, with the energy of a huge cheering crowd. But Bannister did it on a cold dreary day, on a wet track, in front of a small crowd.
Do you think you have to have "perfect conditions" to go after your dream?
Be mindful of the limitations you put on yourself because magic happens when we begin to entertain the idea that something might be possible.
What's YOUR 4-Minute Mile?
In this article I explain how at the very moment of Irish success in sport or history something always derails us at the last moment. See if you agree! If you do, please share it on your sm platforms.
