🤩 SALMON EYE, A NORTHERN CURIOSITY Since September 2022, the "Salmon Eye" exhibition center and art installation has been rising like a space capsule above the waters of Hardanger Fjord in southwest Norway. This project was developed to inspire learning and discussion about the possibilities for a sustainable way of fish farming. The Salmon Eye Pavilion is a beacon of cutting-edge technology and environmental stewardship. It is a unique project, featuring 9,275 seawater-resistant nickel-containing stainless steel cladding elements produced to withstand long-term exposure to seawater. The conceptual design of the facility was handled by the Danish firm Kvorning ApS Design for the Norwegian salmon and trout farm Eide Fjordbruk. Fabrication was handled by Marketex Marine in Tallinn, Estonia. The actual construction of Salmon Eye took 13 months from cutting the first steel plate until it was fully equipped. With one level underwater, the frame of the structure is made of bent H-beams and sheathed with steel sheets. Moored with large anchors to the bottom of the fjord, it weighs 1 000 tonnes and is built to withstand waves up to 5 m high. Salmon Eye is not only a spectacular art installation, but also world-class visitor and learning centre, and home to a fine-dining restaurant, Iris, designed by Norm Architects. Jean-Louis Bidet and his team of skilled carpenters transformed 1,300 oak trees into this masterpiece, using only axes and no modern tools. Every beam, every joint was crafted by hand, as it would have been in the medieval era—a nod to history and craftsmanship. But here’s where the story takes a fascinating twist: atop this traditional marvel now rests a state-of-the-art fire protection system. Equipped with heat-detecting cameras and advanced water mist nozzles, the cathedral stands as a testament to the harmony of preserving the old while embracing the new. This revival of Notre-Dame is more than a restoration; it’s a symbol of resilience and adaptability. Much like the cathedral, traditional corporations today face the challenge of modernizing while staying true to their heritage. The balance of legacy craftsmanship and cutting-edge innovation is a powerful analogy for sustainable transitions in business. Roccia, a hospitality project in Monferrato, Italy, leverages digital technologies like LiDAR scanning for precise adaptive reuse. This project revitalizes the ruins of a historical monastery-turned-farmhouse by integrating a digitally fabricated timber skin, preserving the structure's antiquity and its natural overgrowth. The design harmoniously blends the natural and artificial, suggesting innovative renovation methods for historical buildings. The contemporary intervention includes prefabricated wooden elements within the old brick walls, forming a symbiotic relationship between the new and the ancient. Led by Maestro Technologies, Roccia embodies an approach that celebrates and enhances the site's historical decay.
