Yesterday, we were thrilled to welcome Alek as a guest speaker for our US team in honor of #AutismAcceptanceMonth. He shared his unique career path, his experience as a late-diagnosed autistic professional, and his perspectives on leadership. Here are some of our favorite takeaways: • Autistic employees might not aspire to "climb the ladder" at work or have a traditional response to the question, "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" And that that should be accepted. • Career growth and development can take many forms as each person follows their interests and where they feel most useful. • Although leadership is often associated with people management, there are other ways to demonstrate leadership, for example by taking initiative on addressing a technical issue and finding an innovative solution. How do I foster more engagement? This one took me a long time to learn, and Adam Grant shares great resources about it. What’s more, this is useful in all your meetings. Direct specific questions at one person, whether it’s an external sales meeting or internal leadership meeting, and get the engagement needed to make meaningful progress toward your goals. You might ask questions like: “Brandee, will you share your perspective about this initiative?” “Elisa, how might we pair training with this initiative to increase its chance of success?” “Desy, have you tried anything like this before?” “Patrice, is this different from other services available today?” “Suzette, can we raise awareness and create demand ahead of the official launch date?” “Mahesh, do we have the resources to make these investment according to the proposed schedule?” “Bryan, are we solving the right problem for our customers with this solution?” “Randi, what unintended consequences might there be that we aren’t seeing?” Oh — and surround yourself with incredible folks like my friends here, to get perspectives from inside and outside of your industry. #fearlesslyforward #diversity #engagement #ntech Getting work doesn’t have to be hard.
