Y'all, here's a clear eyed commentary on the current state of AI-enabled drug discovery. The first wave of clinical data from AI-discovered compounds is coming to light and, so far, it does not look anything close to the hyped slam dunk. And it is also too early to know whether AI can achieve the promised savings in time and costs from (novel) target identification to clinical candidate selection. Still, the game hasn't played out and there are many reasons to remain optimistic that at least some of AI's promises will come true. For now, I anticipate consolidation to continue and for investors to start exercising a little more caution. If you've been in biotech for a while, this story may start to sound way too familiar. Here is a nice discussion of the challenges 23&Me faces in a quest to reinvent itself by making use of its large repository of DNA data. For now, it seems to stick to a deep data-driven strategy aimed at identifying drug targets and developing treatments with pharma partners. Despite initial excitement, many biotech companies struggled to meet investor expectations, with 56% of publicly traded biotech firms holding only two years or less of cash by 2023. This financial strain will likely push companies to prove their AI-driven drug development capabilities more rigorously in the present. Only those that prioritize transparency, robust data, scalability, and de-risking will attract sustained investor confidence and drive meaningful advancements in the field. #Biotech
