Let's talk about site safety supervision. This is one that gets the most ignoring. It's all construction not just commercial. 1. Competent Person: A designated competent person must be on-site to identify hazards, ensure compliance with safety standards, and have the authority to take corrective actions. This person must be knowledgeable about OSHA construction standards. 2. Hazard Assessment and Control: Regular assessment of the site to identify potential hazards such as falls, electrical risks, trenching, scaffolding, etc., and implementing measures to control these risks. 3. Fall Protection Plan: In construction, falls are a leading cause of injury. A fall protection plan is mandatory where workers are exposed to falls of six feet or more. 4. Safety Training and Education: Workers must be trained in a language they can understand about job-specific hazards, the use of tools and equipment, and proper safety practices. 5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provision and enforcement of appropriate PPE for workers, including helmets, safety glasses, ear protection, high-visibility vests, and other equipment relevant to the tasks. 6. Regular Site Inspections: Conducting frequent and regular inspections of the job site, materials, and equipment by a competent person. 7. Scaffolding and Ladder Safety: Strict adherence to OSHA standards for scaffolding and ladder use, which are common on construction sites. 8. Record-Keeping: Keeping detailed records of any injuries, exposure to hazardous materials, and safety training sessions. 9. Emergency Action and Fire Prevention Plans: Developing and implementing emergency action and fire prevention plans specific to the site. 10. Health Hazards: Addressing health hazards like exposure to silica, asbestos, or lead, including providing appropriate respiratory protection and other controls. 11. Trenching and Excavation Safety: Ensuring safety measures for trenching and excavation work, one of the most hazardous construction operations. 12. Electrical Safety: Ensuring proper electrical safety practices and protection from electrical hazards. These guidelines are a starting point. The specific nature of each construction project may introduce unique risks and requirements. It’s always best to consult the detailed OSHA standards for construction (29 CFR Part 1926) for comprehensive safety requirements. These are headlines we don't want to share but they're the type that really make people realise the importance of health and safety. ⚠ If you're involved in construction or own a construction company, this case is one for you to take a look at... A Nottinghamshire-based engineering and groundworks contractor were fined £233,000 for safety breaches after a 52-year old HGV driver was struck and killed by the mast of a piling rig at a house build site in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway. The 52 year old was employed by another company and visited the Hallmeadow development off Elm Road with his lorry to collect and transfer the piling rig owned by Van Elle Limited. Tragically, as the mast of the rig was being lowered in preparation for its transportation, it suddenly collapsed and struck the employee. Site workers and the emergency services raced to the scene to try to help him, but he sadly died from his injuries. An investigation by Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that insufficient measures had been taken to maintain the piling rig in a safe condition prior to the incident. Specifically, the securing lug for one of the mast’s retaining pins was badly corroded and failed, allowing the pin to displace, causing the mast to topple. Van Elle Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 5 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. HSE inspector James Caren said: “All work equipment should be subject to suitable inspection and maintenance to ensure that it can be used without risk to the safety of those using it and those in the vicinity. Construction plant are exposed to harsh conditions and require effective inspection and maintenance regimes to avoid safety defects developing. “The company should have had robust measures in place to maintain the piling rig so that it was structurally sound and could be operated safely.” Even if you think everything is safe on site and you've done what you can, there's no harm in allowing us to come and check. The number 1 thing you should never do when you’re choosing a fire safety engineer to engage with? Assume that all Fire Engineers are created equal! Cause (spoiler alert) - they’re not. Here are 5 incredibly important questions you need to be asking yourself before you appoint a fire safety engineering consultancy: → Experience – Have they done this before? → Service delivery – How responsive are they? → Risk appetite – Will they solve the problem, or just say no? → Spirit – Are they willing to collaborate and go the extra mile? → Protection – Mistakes happen - how’s that insurance? What about external cladding cover? #firesafety #fireengineering #projectmanagers #architects #developers Harley Whaikawa | Eliot Reeves
