"Daily Did You Know?" Yesterday was #AFL, so today is National Rugby League (#NRL). Did you know that at the end of this #NRLSeason, St.George Bank will no longer sponsor the St George Illawarra Dragons. It has been a #40yr sponsorship - again one of the longest in Australian sport! It was a match made in heaven - a brand sharing the same name as the team it was sponsoring - what are the chances!? Whilst not surprising, given the legend of St. George, the #NRLTeam is called the Dragons & the bank also has had a green dragon as part of its brand since 1970! St.George Bank has been there for a lot of change & success in the past 40yrs - 2 x Runners Up, 3 x Minor Premierships, 1 x Premiership, the Super League Wars, the merger with the #IllawarraSteelers, strong surge in women's NRL fandom and participation, and explosion in media platforms covering the club. But what went wrong with this dream partnership? Off field scandals and poor on field performance in recent years (I suspect more of the former and compared to the latter) lead St.George Bank to say this #2024NRLseason would be its last (don't worry Dragons fans, you have #TwiggyForrest's Squadron Energy taking over from St.George Bank in 2025 - interestingly, Twiggy's first sponsorship foray into the NRL). It didn't take long to figure out we had a mindset problem after taking over Framingham lacrosse in 2020. Looking at the results, we turned a team struggling to win 3 or more games for 6+ seasons into a team with 3 straight postseason appearances. We are currently ranked #16 with an opportunity to host a playoff game - something Framingham hasn't done in 10 years. But my mentor Pete Bidstrup reminds me the less we focus on the result, the better we perform, the better the results (sweet irony!). Focus on being present - be aware that emotion is the enemy to performance - shift the focus from being the best to being the best version of yourself. Our entire team wears Coach Bidstrup's Human Reset bracelets - with a little button on it - no matter what is going on we can press the reset button and come back to the present moment. Detachment from the result is the superpower of elite teams... Yes, it is easier said than done! ... but in the end, it all comes down to our mentality...
