Two recent developments are paving the way for a more sustainable future for Indian infrastructure, both centered around steel #slag , a by-product of #steel production.   1. #tatasteel has launched Tata Dureco – the branded Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) in its journey towards sustainable value creation from by-products. GGBS, a downstream product from Blast Furnace Slag has been successfully established as an alternative cementitious material in the construction industry. Over the years, this product has generated good demand from the Ready-Mix-Concrete and Infrastructure Projects across geographies like high-rise buildings, dams, bridges, and national highways. This move not only promotes #sustainability but also offers a reliable and efficient alternative for construction materials.   2- AM/NS India is taking the lead in building India's first all-steel slag road near the Surat Diamond Bourse. This groundbreaking project will utilize 100% processed steel slag in all layers of the road, showcasing its potential as a viable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional road construction materials. Additionally, AMNSI’s initiative to sell steel slag to contractors ensures its proper utilization and environmental benefits.   These developments mark a significant shift towards embracing steel slag as a valuable resource in Indian infrastructure. By minimizing air pollution from landfills, steel slag usage paves the way for a circular economy in the construction sector. On Sunday, Indian Railways marked a monumental achievement with the trial train run from Sangaldan to Reasi, traversing the world's highest rail bridge over the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir. This milestone is a significant part of the ambitious Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, poised to revolutionize connectivity and trade in the Union Territory. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this momentous news on X (formerly Twitter) on June 16, announcing, "The first trial train has successfully journeyed from Sangaldan to Reasi, crossing the iconic Chenab Bridge. With the exception of a partially incomplete Tunnel No.1, all construction works for the USBRL are nearly complete." The Chenab Bridge, an engineering marvel, stands 359 meters (approximately 1,178 feet) above the Chenab River, making it 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. Constructed amidst the harsh terrain and challenging weather conditions of J&K, this bridge exemplifies human ingenuity and determination. Spanning a gorge in the Reasi district, the Chenab Arch Bridge boasts an impressive arch span of 467 meters. With a construction cost of around Rs 14,000 crore, it is designed to last 120 years and withstand high-velocity winds up to 260 km/h, extreme temperatures, earthquakes, and potential hydrological impacts. This initiative, aimed at residential and overall development, awaits final consent from the state government. The idea of Navnagar arises from the anticipation of increased migration to Navi Mumbai, particularly with the upcoming trans-harbor sea link. Once state government approval is secured, further steps will include formulating a detailed master plan post-environmental clearance. MMRDA's active involvement in the Mumbai Harbor Sea Link project, with 97% completion, will significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to 20-22 minutes, creating various development opportunities in the impact zone. This has prompted the initiation of Navnagar's development in this region. CIDCO's recent approval sets the stage for subsequent actions pending final consent from the state government. The Navnagar Development Authority will cover 323.44 square kilometers, including areas related to CIDCO's Naina project.
