On Sunday, Indian Railways marked a monumental achievement with the trial train run from Sangaldan to Reasi, traversing the world's highest rail bridge over the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir. This milestone is a significant part of the ambitious Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, poised to revolutionize connectivity and trade in the Union Territory.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this momentous news on X (formerly Twitter) on June 16, announcing, "The first trial train has successfully journeyed from Sangaldan to Reasi, crossing the iconic Chenab Bridge. With the exception of a partially incomplete Tunnel No.1, all construction works for the USBRL are nearly complete."
The Chenab Bridge, an engineering marvel, stands 359 meters (approximately 1,178 feet) above the Chenab River, making it 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. Constructed amidst the harsh terrain and challenging weather conditions of J&K, this bridge exemplifies human ingenuity and determination.
Spanning a gorge in the Reasi district, the Chenab Arch Bridge boasts an impressive arch span of 467 meters. With a construction cost of around Rs 14,000 crore, it is designed to last 120 years and withstand high-velocity winds up to 260 km/h, extreme temperatures, earthquakes, and potential hydrological impacts.
This architectural triumph not only symbolizes India's engineering prowess but also promises to enhance the socio-economic landscape of the region by significantly improving transportation and trade networks.
