Sikhs in Clinical Research’s Post

Clinical research paves the way for groundbreaking treatments and cures, but its success depends on participation from all communities. Unfortunately, the Sikh community and other underrepresented groups may remain on the sidelines, resulting in healthcare solutions that may not fully address their unique needs. Barriers such as lack of awareness, mistrust, cultural differences, and language challenges discourage participation in clinical trials. At Sikhs in Clinical Research (SICR), we are bridging these gaps by: 1. Hosting informational sessions at Sikh community centers and other local spaces. 2. Providing resources in English and Punjabi to ensure accessibility. 3. Building trust and awareness about the importance of clinical trials. Advocating for Sikh inclusion means creating opportunities for the community to benefit from and contribute to advancements in healthcare. Promoting diversity in clinical research is crucial for advancing healthcare solutions that benefit everyone. To achieve this, we must engage students and professionals from diverse backgrounds and make clinical research accessible to all through education, outreach, and awareness. Sikhs in Clinical Research has been a key player in raising awareness about clinical research within the Sikh community. Through events at community centers, SICR raises awareness about clinical research, both as a career option and as a potential treatment option. While clinical trials offer access to innovative treatments-- mistrust, cultural differences, and language barriers often discourage participation. SICR is working to overcome these challenges by organizing informational sessions in Sikh community centers and other local spaces. By offering resources in both English and Punjabi, we ensure that everyone has access to information about the value of clinical research and its potential benefits for individuals and families. Here is the handbook that we have prepared to be a reference for the healthcare/research industry to maintain their awareness of the Sikh faith and provide culturally sensitive care to people of the Sikh faith. This handbook provides important information on the Sikh faith, as well as information on Sikh beliefs, values, and practices that may affect the provision of care. Healthcare professionals work in an increasingly diverse environment. Those who display cross-cultural capabilities in their work use self-reflection, cultural understanding, contextual understanding, communication, and collaboration to provide culturally appropriate, responsive, and safe health care. Ensuring that diverse voices are represented in clinical research can lead to more inclusive and effective health solutions. Here’s how efforts in these areas can make a difference: Workforce Diversity 1. Enhanced Representation: By encouraging Sikhs to pursue careers in clinical research, SICR is making efforts that the research teams reflect the diverse populations they serve. This leads to more culturally competent care and research that is more attuned to the specific needs of diverse communities. 2. Broader Perspectives: Diverse teams bring a variety of perspectives and experiences, which can lead to more innovative solutions and a deeper understanding of health disparities. 3. Role Models and Mentorship: Representation matters. Having visible Sikh professionals in clinical research can inspire the next generation and provide mentorship opportunities. Health Equity 1. Inclusive Research: Ensuring that clinical studies include participants from the Sikh community helps gather data that is relevant to their specific health needs. This can lead to better, more effective treatments tailored to their unique genetic, cultural, and environmental contexts. 2. Education and Awareness: SICR can educate the Sikh community about the importance of clinical research, increasing participation rates and fostering a better understanding of how research impacts health outcomes. 3. Addressing Disparities: By focusing on health equity, SICR can help identify and address specific health disparities within the Sikh community, promoting policies and practices that ensure equal access to quality healthcare. . . . Breaking news: I have got a very good story that you may cover in your news media. A leading US-based #Muslim-operated #humanitarian organization committed to delivering relief and international development projects worldwide, including significant initiatives in Bangladesh from January 27 to 30. Its leadership team will visit Bangladesh to officially launch an impactful new project called “Clinic on Wheels” (CoW). This initiative aims to address the critical #healthcare gaps in rural and remote areas of Bangladesh by providing essential medical services directly to #UnderservedCommunities. The project will deploy a fully equipped mobile medical team to rural districts, including Tangail, Mymensingh, Jamalpur, and Sherpur. The Clinic on Wheels will include: - A large van equipped with basic medical facilities - Two physicians - One medical assistant - One midwife/nurse - Basic medical equipment for field-based patient care - Necessary medications for distribution at camp locations The project aims to deliver monthly medical campaigns, providing prescriptions and medications to over 3,000 patients in remote areas. Additionally, the initiative will engage local volunteers to support the camps and train some community members to become paramedical assistants, fostering long-term health awareness and capacity-building. First publication of 2025 AD: Baseline data analysis of knowledge, skill, practice and adherence on AMR among mothers in the Mahalaxmi (intervention) and Godawari (comparison) municipalities of Lalitpur district, Nepal in PLOS One. This quasi experimental study is ongoing with periodic monitoring and supportive supervision of local FCHVs as well as process evaluation in the intervention area. ZMQ Development created MIRA Channel  in 2014, enabling mobiles phones women friendly, especially for rural women. MIRA is deployed in Mewat, Alwar, Mayurbhanj, Baihraich, Shravasti & Thane districts (in Mumbra & Kausa) in India. The tools are adapted for Uganda in 4 languages Luganda, Lusoga, Runyankole & Rutooro; and Kinyarwanda in Rwanda. The toolkit is reaching to over 4.6 million women for prenatal and postnatal care, family planning, child routine immunisation and adolescent girl health communication, tracking & services. This #WorldNutritionDay, we’re excited to commemorate one year of the Increase Gains in Nutrition by Integration, Education, Evaluation & Empowerment (IGNIT3) project! Join us in reflecting on some of IGNIT3's achievements over the past year while working towards improving nutrition for children, adolescent girls and women in Ghana, Malawi and Pakistan: ➡ We've successfully initiated IGNIT3 in all three project locations — Ghana, Malawi and Pakistan! The support and presence of government and health system leaders in each country graced the official launch ceremonies. ➡ A gender and human rights analysis has been completed in all three countries! These findings will help ensure a comprehensive approach to understanding the different needs of women and men and addressing gender inequalities. ➡ Important formative research has started! To better understand the local context of the locations IGNIT3 is based in, partners in all three countries have been engaged in formative research. In Pakistan, the Formative Research Report on Barriers to Online Learning for Health Professionals has been completed and will serve as a roadmap for implementing IGNIT3’s online nutrition courses.
