Looking at mergers and acquisitions, the recent fun from KKR, SROA, et al., and I’m thinking. If all your company does is move paper back and forth, dumping debt on the assets as part of the sale (amazing how the Double Lever is perfectly legal, almost as if lawmakers are also landlords…), you’re not making anything useful. You’re not building properties or growing the industry, you’re certainly not creating jobs or paying living wages for them, and you’re not doing anything resembling labor or work; which means you’re not actually generating wealth either, you’re only extracting it. Will this heady rush of cash sludged up by the shovels of usury be put into improving those storage properties beyond a cosmetic glow-up to entice tenants? What about the long-overdue maintenance left undone by previous absentee landlords? Plug, patch, pocket the rest, and pray it holds until you can sell the bottle imp to a bigger fool? Whether trading regulatory credits, crypto-“currency,” or #selfstorage properties, when you’re not putting anything back in through sustained re-investment, you’re like a bunch of kids trading around the same collection of baseball cards until the corners are worn off and all the good cards sold away. The idea that mere ownership alone entitles one to profit is toxic. Extraction without benefit is the behavior of a parasite.

A Texas Stock Exchange? This is the first I’ve heard of this. Experts believe if Texas Stock Exchange CEO James Lee is able to get his registration for it approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, it will have a positive impact on Dallas.
