After an action-packed year covering events in the packaging industry locally and abroad, I'm ready for a few weeks of rest to recharge ahead of 2025, which looks set to be another big year. As I sign off for the year with this last post, and wish everyone happy holidays and a merry Christmas to those who celebrate the day, here's my review of the year that was in Australian packaging. It covers the highs and lows playing out against a clouded backdrop of uncertainty caused in part by the dangling sword of DCCEEW's proposed Packaging Regulation Reform, and in part by the mounting pressure of rising manufacturing costs. Pepkor has always focused on delivering more for less, with retail brands like PEP making the unaffordable affordable. With a distribution network spanning 5 900 stores, from urban hubs to remote rural areas, we’re driving efficiency at every turn. With our Switch Off Something campaign (held in June 2024 around World Environment Day), the measured impact in Ackermans stores saved the group 140.79 tonnes in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) which is the equivalent of planting 5 420 trees. What’s even more, through innovative technology and optimisation projects within Pepkor Logistics, the group has reduced the litres of fuel used to deliver a single cubic metre of stock annually by 2% on average over the past 5 years since 2017.
