Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a date that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On this day, in 1865, the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was achieved by the Union Army and slavery was brought to an end in the former Confederate states. #Juneteenth2024

If you are interested in #ChildSoldiers, check out my latest Op-Ed for Orion Policy Institute on the #Houthis' recruitment of child soldiers in #Yemen. As the Houthis claim that they have recruited more than 7,000 people to their armed forces since #October7, hundreds (but possibly even thousands of those) are believed to be children. In Houthi-controlled areas, families that refuse to send their children to join the armed group's ranks are subjected to retribution, with their children ending up abducted, detained, and abused. The increasing exposure of Yemeni children to military training and (direct or indirect) participation in hostilities - combined with limited access to education, rampant poverty, and ideological indoctrination - does not bode well for a peaceful future. Our offices are closed today, Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in observance of the Juneteenth Holiday. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when a Union Army general arrived in Texas with 2,000 soldiers and informed over 250,000 Black Americans enslaved in Texas that slavery had been abolished following the conclusion of the Civil War. This was two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had declared that “all persons held as slaves … henceforward shall be free” (and 3 months after Lincoln’s assassination). #BestoftheSeacoast2024 #BestoftheSeacoast2023WinnerBestLawFirm #BestoftheSeacoast2023finalist #Brennanrogerspllchattrick #BestoftheSeacoast2022WinnerBestLawFirm #Bestoftheseacoast2021WinnerBestLawFirm #smiliegrogers #marykathrynbrennan #brennanrogerspllc #pllcrogers #planningforlifestranstions #newenglandestateplanning #myestateplan #estateplanning #maineestateattorney #digitalhereinafter #elderlaw #probate #MaineCare #kennebunk #york #portland #zoom #Juneteenth

#ThrowbackThursday #DYK The 1957 Civil Rights Act created by Gen. Eisenhower, marked a new era in the civil rights legislative program. It set the precedent for increased federal responsibility in protecting African American rights. The objective of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 was not to create new rights, but to protect the ones that already existed. Through the creation of the Civil Rights Division in the Department of Justice, it also allowed federal enforcement of civil rights law. One of the primary aims of the 1957 Civil Rights Bill was to ensure that all African Americans could exercise their right to vote. Previously, black Americans faced intimidation and threats at the ballot box. This birthed a new division within the federal Justice Department to monitor civil rights abuses and a joint report to be done by representatives of both major political parties (Democrats and Republicans) on the issue of race relations. #PeopleFirst #CivilRights #HumanRights #Equility #AmericanRights #CivilRightsAct #ILikeIke #Eisenhower #FortEisenhower US Army | US Army TRADOC | U.S. Army Combined Arms Center | U.S. Army Cyber Command | U.S. Army Signal School

The U.S. Army's recent policy revision aimed at curbing extremist activities among its ranks contrasts the broader U.S. foreign policy, which endorses and supports extremist groups abroad to compel and coerce national interests. This policy intends to define and penalize extremist affiliations and behaviors within the military, a necessary step following unsettling revelations about military personnel's participation in the January 6 Capitol riots. However, this internal crackdown highlights a glaring inconsistency when juxtaposed with America's foreign engagements. The U.S. has a history of supporting groups with extremist leanings or authoritarian tendencies in strategic regions, from the Middle East to Eastern Europe and Latin America. In places like Ukraine, Bolivia, and Israel, the U.S. support has sometimes extended to factions that openly espouse radical ideologies, including groups linked to neo-Nazism and authoritarianism. This support is often rationalized as a necessary evil to counteract adversaries or to promote American geopolitical interests, such as installing or maintaining pro-U.S. governments or destabilizing anti-U.S. regimes. This dual approach raises ethical and moral questions and undermines the integrity and effectiveness of domestic policies like those the Army is implementing. It suggests a form of hypocrisy where the definition of extremism can seemingly be bent based on contextual convenience, weakening the U.S.'s stance on democracy and human rights globally. For the U.S. to maintain domestic and international credibility, a more consistent and principled approach that aligns foreign policy actions with the values it professes to uphold is crucial. This alignment is essential to combat extremism and foster a global perception of the U.S. as a genuine advocate for democracy and human rights.
Servicemembers (and potentially Veterans) are more easily held accountable for liking and sharing extremist content. The Army has introduced a crucial new policy to combat extremism. Under this policy, soldiers could face disciplinary action for sharing or liking extremist content on social media platforms. This proactive step underscores the Army's commitment to maintaining a culture of respect, integrity, and professionalism online and offline. The original policy was introduced after Veterans and active duty service members were charged in connection with the January 6th riot. This updated policy comes in response to rising concerns about extremist activities within the military. During a recent testimony before the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs (2021), the Center for Strategic & International Studies highlighted that the recruitment of Veterans by violent domestic extremist groups poses a significant threat. The testimony emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures to prevent the spread of extremist ideologies among service members. (https://lnkd.in/eGkApAH3). It's important to note that some service members can still be held accountable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) even after leaving service while also being subjected to federal law. These two legal systems operate independently and are not considered a problem under the principle of double jeopardy. 🔗 Read the full article (https://lnkd.in/eyhgPse7) To learn more about Veterans and their impact on society, consider Saint Leo University's Veteran Studies Degree, the first four-year degree of its kind in the nation. https://lnkd.in/ei3i7SZs

Juneteenth On June 19, 1865, Galveston, Texas, held a momentous celebration of freedom. Despite the Civil War's conclusion on April 9, 1865, slavery persisted in various states, with Texas being the final Confederate state to abolish the practice. The 135th US Colored Troops, which included my great-grandfather, played a pivotal role in paving the way for General Sherman's journey to Texas. Why International social organizations and NGOs are silent? In this era, justice does not exist. Why most of the developed nations are supporting Israel? These nations believed in strategic planning, it means each and every step taken by Israel is preplanned and it seems like developed countries were members of that strategic committee.

The child looks less than 10years old even from the partial ariel view. In other countries we call this abduction. Every year the Isreli army abducts 500-700 children, detaining them in military style prisons. This is Hebron, West Bank. Not Gaza, No Hamus, No so called label of war. Hebron is known as a case study of Isreli apartheid. What you see is no recent phenomena. The invading colonial forces have been abducting children decade after decade. The only difference now is your mind is open to these atrocities and seeing it on numerous non-mainstream media. What actually happens to these children after abduction, will save for a later post. The question to ask yourself is, Why is Isrel allowed to abduct children with impunity? ⚠️The Israeli occupation forces detain a child from the Idris family after raiding his home in Al-Salaymeh neighborhood in the city of Hebron. 8.1.24 _________ #hebron #isre #Apartheid #ceasefire #gaza #palestine #genocide
