What a great joy (truly!) to represent the Stupski Foundation to talk about our mental health and wellness investments to other funders at the 2023 Grantmakers for Education's conference -- and to share space with the wonderful Kristin Boyer of the Trellis Foundation, Paige Woods for Black Girls Smile Inc., and Sierra Malia F. of The Upswing Fund for Adolescent Mental Health (from afar -- we missed you!). If you could not make the session, some of our key through- lines/takeaways are: 1. Employ a big tent strategy -- we need everyone (TA providers, institutions, national advocacy orgs, funders, and more), not just single programs attempting to solve major challenges. 2. Expand the definition of mental health -- be inclusive of proactive care and preventative investments that include basic needs and wraparound supports – not just diagnosis-based treatments. 3. Be critical of your grantmaking practices -- what practices do funders employ to cause more stress to our grantees? There's a lot of them!
How do you measure joy? -- One of the important questions considered during our panel on "Funding Holistic and Systemic Approaches to Mental Health" at #GFE2023 with Grantmakers for Education. Beautiful and thoughtful commentary from attendees, and I learned so much from my co-presenters Jennifer V. Nguyen and Paige Woods. Big S/O to Sierra Malia F., our co-creator for the session.

Investing in the mental health of our youth is paramount for their overall well-being and future success. Adolescence is a crucial stage where positive mental health fosters academic achievement, resilient coping mechanisms, and healthy social relationships. By prioritizing early intervention and support, we can empower youth to navigate the challenges of adolescence effectively and lay the foundation for a lifetime of mental well-being. Consider joining the movement to ensure our youth have the resources and support they need to thrive mentally and emotionally.

Tri-County Health Network is shining a light on Mental Health Awareness in our communities during the month of May. We recognize and support Mental Health Awareness Month during the month of May, and aim to raise awareness, provide resources, and foster understanding surrounding mental health issues. This month, we are encouraging local businesses, organizations and governments to illuminate their buildings with green lights throughout the month of May. In addition to lighting buildings with green lights, we encourage individuals and our communities to join us in showing support for mental health by participating in our “Be Seen in Green” challenge on Thursday, May 16, 2024. By lighting up buildings with green, businesses and organizations become visible allies in the fight to destigmatize mental health and promote understanding. And by wearing green, you’re not just wearing a color; you’re standing up for mental health, making a difference, and fostering a brighter tomorrow. Globally, mental health in the workplace is a growing concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion each year in lost productivity. In the United States alone, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that nearly one in five adults experience mental illness in a given year, impacting their ability to work effectively. Moreover, a survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that workplace stress is a significant factor contributing to mental health issues, with around 65% of Americans citing work as a top source of stress. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that employees with depression miss an average of 27 workdays per year, further highlighting the economic impact of mental health challenges in the workplace. Recognizing the importance of addressing mental health concerns, many employers are implementing initiatives such as employee assistance programs (EAPs), mental health training for managers, and flexible work arrangements to support employees' well-being and improve productivity. However, there is still a need for greater awareness, education, and destigmatization of mental health issues in the workplace to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for all employees. With a desire to make an impact and change lives, Josh Painter, Bobbie Dyer, Justin Snyder, and Joshua Adams partnered to create a film that visually told the story of mental health in America."Breakthrough" takes viewers on an emotional journey through the complexities of mental health. Through powerful storytelling and intimate interviews, "Breakthrough" offers a raw and authentic portrayal of the human experience with mental illness, highlighting the importance of understanding, compassion, and support. Join me on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 for the showing of this powerful documentary followed by a conversation with business, workforce development, and mental health experts from Brevard.
