Excited to Announce Our New Publication! Our article, The Mosque of the Blessed Tree in Safawi, Jordan, co-authored with Architect maher abusamra, has been published in the Journal of Traditional Building, Architecture, and Urbanism. Design Methodology Highlights The mosque’s architectural style emphasizes simplicity and harmony with nature, using traditional load-bearing elements with minimal ornamentation. Key design features include: • A rectangular layout oriented toward the qiblah, aligning with the Blessed Tree. • Three prayer halls: • The main hall, featuring a striking 9-meter-high dome and accessed via a vaulted entrance. • Two secondary halls, one with a dedicated entrance for women, covered with shallow domes supported by pendentives. • Structural vaulting, with Islamic 3/5 pointed arches, creating a buffer zone between the main and secondary halls for load transfer and architectural stability. Ancient warmth and ephemeral cool is connected through the theme of archaic shelter and packed ice. Drawing inspiration from both ancient indigenous structures and natural phenomenon, the design is an evocative and diverse sculptural composition. The primeval semi-open hut by the campfire was called a “laavu” as a small temporary shelter and “kammi” when built on a communal scale. The form was as simple as the construction itself a wooden lean-to post and beam structure with one side left open towards a fireplace lined with stone. The warm glow of this modernised shelter is both contrasted with and complemented by crystalline glazed spaces. These structures evoke images of the springtime spectacle of the arctic rivers: as the snow melts and the ice cover begins to thaw and break, the current and wind drifts the ice blocks into packs that stack up into imaginative formations. Warm and sensual, cool and airy alternate in the architecture. Natural stone surfaces, earthy wooden cladding and moss-covered rooftops blend into the landscape, while glass structures glow with light and reflect the colours of the sky. The works of Luciano Kruk propose an architecture that works in harmony with the environment, the landscape, and the nature in which they are situated. Whether immersed in a forest, on sloping terrain, or on a rural plain, among other geographies, his intention is to enhance the relationship between the interior and exterior of the architecture, using #concrete as the main material in most of his projects.
