🌐 As global leaders converge at #cop28uae, a pressing (age old) question looms: "Can technology save us?" - The planet will do just fine without us :) To explore this, let's consider the concept of Kondratiev cycles. These long-term economic waves, typically lasting 40-60 years, have historically been defined by technological revolutions that drastically alter economic and social landscapes. From the age of steel and railroads to the era of information technology, each cycle has propelled humanity into new frontiers of development and innovation. 🌍 Today, we find ourselves potentially at the dawn of a new Kondratiev wave, driven by #greentechnologies and #sustainablesolutions. But the question remains – are we adapting fast enough to meet the critical demands of climate change? 🔍 "The State of Climate Action 2023" by the World Economic Forum and colleagues at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) highlights that our current technologies such as those which improve #efficiency, generate #renewablenergy and #EVs can already deliver a bit more than half of the #decarbonisation action required to reach #netzero2050. However, only about 55% of the necessary #greentechnologies are currently cost-competitive (see figure below). The rest, including vital early-stage technologies such as #hydrogen, #carboncapture, and #directaircapture, are still struggling with cost and scalability. 💰 Compounding this is the vast climate funding gap according to this report. In 2022, more than half of the annual $4 trillion needed for climate action remained unfunded. This financial shortfall is especially pronounced in funding early-stage, high-potential technologies. 🚀 So, can #technology save us from the #climatecrisis? Yes, but only if we - phase out #fossilfuels, - make #greentechnologies more affordable, and - significantly increase #greenfunding for these innovations. #cop28 is not just a meeting; it's a call to action for nations, industries, and communities to collaborate and invest in a #sustainablefuture. From the bustling Innovation & Technology hub at #COP28, Day 2 has been an incredibly energizing experience. Participating in the opening keynote alongside the visionary Managing Partner of Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Eric Toone, was truly a privilege. Our session, "From Smart Grids to Carbon Capture: Technology’s Impact on Climate Action," sparked thought-provoking discussions on how we can leverage technology to reach net zero and support the goals of the Paris Agreement. I recorded this quick video on the spot highlighting my four key takeaways: 1. Technology will be the key to solving the net-zero equation. The tools we need are within our reach, but we must be relentless in our pursuit of innovation. 2. Acceleration is critical. Scaling our solutions must happen faster than ever before. We need to move at breakneck speed to deploy and scale these technologies globally. 3. The cost curve must plummet. Affordability will drive accessibility, and we need to ensure our efforts in carbon reduction technologies are cost-effective. The race to the bottom of the cost curve is a race we cannot afford to lose. 4. The future is promising. We have numerous powerful technologies that are now starting to scale. These innovations are our best bet to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The road ahead is challenging, but with collective effort, radical ambition, and an innovation mindset, we can get there.
