Bringing the best of learning and development thinking and skills to business success. L&D, OD, Talent, Resilience Author, ex-Business Owner, Speaker
An important part of our resilience is the community of people around us. The people in our lives help give us an indication of what we can achieve and what's possible. In a community we can lean on people to help us when we don't know what we need. You have an idea, but need to talk about it with someone in a safe space. You want to try something and need to know how to do it. You're struggling and don't know what your next steps should be. You need help and don't know who to ask or how to ask them. Community is and always has been one of the key ways we find resilience.

Fostering resilience in ourselves and our communities is how we develop antibodies to violence. But what does resilience mean—beyond the individualistic stories of peeps bouncing back from trauma? Resilience, it turns out, is more social than individual. It sometimes means being lax—taking time away from labor and chores, nurturing and recharging, so we can get up and show up for team peace, each and every day. It means prioritizing our own wellbeing along with the wellbeing of our neighbors. Community builds immunity. It means aligning our healing with the healing of nature. It means recognizing that none of us is alone in this world. Separation is a mirage. Interdependence is truth. When we’re healthy, we’re lax, we’re healed, we’re TOGETHER. This collective effort to find flourishing and peace in our day becomes easier. It becomes not only possible, but probable—a self-fulfilling prophecy! Dedicated to Lifelong Learning, Mentorship, and Community Empowerment | Driving Lasting Social Change
Hey everyone! 👋 I am thrilled to share that I will be consulting for the incredible team at Lost&Found, a dedicated organization on a mission to deliver comprehensive, data-driven, and resilience-focused suicide prevention and postvention programs for youth and young adults (ages 10-34) and their support networks. As a consultant, I will focus on Tribal liaison work, infusing a cultural lens into our initiatives. It's a unique approach that recognizes diverse backgrounds and ensures our programs resonate with everyone. Free Initiatives I'm Proud to Promote (more to share as I learn!): 1. Peer2Peer Mentorship Program is a beacon of support for young individuals navigating life's challenges. Through mentorship, we foster resilience, empathy, and a sense of community. Check out the link to learn more about this impactful initiative and the universities that apply this model here in South Dakota. https://lnkd.in/gTY5ZxDg 2. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Training is a powerful one-to-two-hour training designed to empower individuals to recognize and respond to a suicide crisis. Similar to CPR for physical health, QPR equips you with the tools to save lives by questioning, persuading, and referring someone to help. https://lnkd.in/gkurTB2C 3. The Campus Resilience Index seeks to understand how we evaluate and enhance resilience on campuses. This index is a crucial tool in our commitment to creating environments that promote mental well-being. https://lnkd.in/gWkabCpa 🔗 For more details about Lost & Found and our wide range of programs, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/gV9HVYei My email: dmjohnson@resilienttoday.org Together, we can make a difference! 💙 #MentalHealthMatters #ResilienceForYouth #LostAndFoundInitiative

Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from tough times—it’s about the powerful, supportive relationships between individuals and their communities. Here’s how reciprocal behaviors play a key role: 🔄 Mutual Support: Individual resilience often relies on community support. Spending time with optimistic, supportive people boosts personal optimism and strength. 💪 Community Service: Engaging in community activities helps individuals find meaning and connect to something bigger than themselves. It also reinforces community bonds and shared identity. 👥 Shared Experiences: Facing fears and grief is easier with the support of others. Communities provide the social networks that help individuals cope and recover. 📖 Role Models: Resilient communities offer role models for individuals. Seeing others overcome adversity provides inspiration and guidance. By fostering these reciprocal behaviors, we can build stronger, more resilient individuals and communities. By implementing these interventions, we can create environments where both individuals and communities can better withstand and recover from crises. Discover more about how reciprocal behaviors strengthen resilience. There are times we seek someone to help us, to shine their own light on our way, to give us guidance so we don't get lost in consuming darkness. There are times we need someone to hold our hand, to be a pillar we can lean against for rest, to strengthen us with their words and support. There are times we seek people who can help us with more than we have, with more than we believe we are capable of, with more than we are able to deliver. Question: when we don't find these people, or when they are late in coming to our aid, what do we do? Should we not feel the edges of the path with our feet, with our arms outstretched in front of us as we brave the darkness? Should we not start to do the bit or part we are capable of while we wait for help? Should we not walk slowly, cautious of the dangers that may lurk? Should we not learn the ropes, create mental maps, and follow the clouds, knowing that soon they will become too heavy, and turn to the much needed rain we seek? Should we wait for help, when we can build capacity to help ourselves, borrowing tools and pieces of advice as we venture? Should we weep, when we know that weeping doesn't help us get to our goals? Weeping is for those who have come to the end of their rope, those who see no hope. Do you see hope? Yes? Then don't weep! Walk with those who are on the same path as you. Ask them how they managed to overcome the difficulties you have experienced. Call to those ahead of you and ask them where is safest to travel. Ask them what you may need to know, as you inch towards your destination. Make friends, one, two, or three, knowing that the strongest ropes are made of many twines in one accord. Community creates strength. Never walk alone. Leslie George

Fari, our Senior Community Builder shared a reflection during the staff retreat. As a Washingtonian, community safety is a concern. The main focus of The SIA 2024 Winter Retreat was skill-building, campaign presentations, creative writing and breathing techniques for self care. We explored ways to engage The DC City Council, SIA’s current members and prospective leaders and the community as a whole throughout our issue area campaigns. We will empower individuals to make decisions for themselves, tap into resilience during challenging times, and enable them to educate others in the community. On the second day of our retreat, I received a distressing call- my home in Washington DC was burglarized. My front door was wide open, as it rained all day and fortunately, my grandchildren were at school during the incident. The burglars must have been spooked as they vandalized my bedroom and closet locks and doors. It’s also obvious they knew the times we wouldn't be home. When my grandchildren reached the front porch, they were spooked and traumatized upon realizing what happened. Sadly, experiences like these are not uncommon in our community and happen almost every day. However, the Protective Factors I’ve learned and taught to other family leaders in SIA Parent Cafes, kicked in immediately: resilience- don’t panic; concrete supports-I called our mental health community workers to provide immediate supports to my children, communication- I called my sons and sister to organize around the clock monitoring and relationships- a very close friend took them to dinner to ease their minds and their moods while locks were changed. Consoling my grandchildren made me reflect on the struggles that other people in our community endure daily. It raised the question, how we can come together to build safer and better communities in all areas of our city and work collaboratively to prevent such incidents from happening by attacking the root causes of suffering in black and brown communities. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this. How do you think communities can unite to address safety concerns and build a more secure environment for everyone?
