Family members and attorneys for personal care are often ill-prepared for their role and surprised the caregiving role may go on for 10 or 15 years with increasing hours required over time as the disease advances. As family members and planning advisors, one of the first steps we can take is to educate ourselves and our clients on the realities of care management and then focus on personalized care planning and how to pay for it. #Dementia #ElderManagement

Aastha Hospice Dr. Abhishek Shukla - Elderly mobilization is a critical aspect of healthcare that significantly impacts the health and well-being of older adults. Dr. Abhishek Shukla emphasizes the importance of keeping elderly patients active, as mobility can greatly affect their overall quality of life. Regular movement helps combat the physical decline associated with aging, reducing the risks of falls, improving cardiovascular health, and enhancing mental well-being. Dr. Shukla advocates for rehabilitation programs that encourage elderly patients to experience the outdoors, where they can enjoy open air and greenery. Such environments are not only therapeutic but also provide a refreshing change from indoor settings. Engaging with nature has been shown to bring positive psychological benefits, reducing feelings of anxiety and depression while promoting a sense of calm and well-being. This connection to nature can motivate elderly patients to participate in their rehabilitation actively, leading to faster recovery and improved physical health. Incorporating outdoor mobilization into care plans allows elderly patients to benefit from sunlight, fresh air, and the soothing effects of greenery, which can enhance their recovery process. Dr. Shukla's approach focuses on holistic rehabilitation, recognizing that both physical activity and emotional support are vital for the health of elderly individuals. By encouraging outdoor mobilization, he aims to foster a more positive recovery experience, ensuring that older adults can enjoy a better quality of life. #AasthaCares #ElderlyMobilization #Rehabilitation #GeriatricCare #HealthyAging #OutdoorTherapy #MentalWellbeing #NatureHealing #QualityOfLife #ActiveAging #ElderlyHealth #HolisticCare #PositiveRecovery #MobilityMatters #sajournalofgeriatric #drabhishekshukla #aasthacares #aasthahospice

#journalclub #caregivers This morning, we discussed a 🇹🇼 Taiwanese study about „Predictors of caregiver burden in aged caregivers of demented older patients“. This paper raised an important issue of aged society that both patients and caregivers were more than 65 years old. The outcome was Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) score. In the multivariate models, more than 41 variables were included in the analysis. However, as there were only 328 patients in the study, this could cause unstable estimates. In our Roundtable discussion, the clinicians pointed out that they made similar observations in their practice: 1. the burden of caregivers increased, as the patient became more apathetic and irritable. This made caregivers no longer have the patience to handle the demented partner. 2. it could be helpful to educate the caregivers to recognise the disease „dementia“. It means their relationship with their current partner will no longer be the same. Some couples have been together for more than 60years. It’s tough to accept that the person you know so well is now a new person. In addition, it’s time for the caregivers to learn to say goodbye slowly. I somehow can share the feelings of those caregivers, as my grandma lived to age of 102 years, and passed away in 2022 😢. In her last 20 years, it took our whole family (countless energy, time and money) to take care of her. We hired a full time maid, and my aunt was full time at home to help her as well. Without those two full time caregivers, she would not have lived for so long. As our society is ageing rapidly, we need to find a better solution to reduce burden on aged caregivers. 👵🏻👨🦳

Today, the Alzheimer’s Association released its 2024 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures report, which provides an in-depth look at the latest statistics and information on Alzheimer’s disease prevalence, incidence, mortality, caregiving, dementia care workforce, and costs of care across the U.S. and in Michigan. According to the new report, 6.9 million people aged 65 and older in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s, including more than 200,000 in Michigan. The national cost of caring for these individuals is projected to reach $360 billion this year a $15 billion increase from a year ago. Currently, there are 380,000 Alzheimer's and dementia family caregivers across Michigan -- providing an estimated 872 million hours of unpaid care valued at $17 billion. Dementia IS a public health issue and I hope more elected state officials and public health leaders here in Michigan will recognize the importance of addressing the impact of the disease, as well as provide funding to prevent and detect it. #endalz #michigan #publichealth #dementia #caregiving #aging

This number really stood out... To have the person with Alzheimer remain at home, the current costs for a Personal Support Worker range from $31.00 per hour ($744/24h or $22,320/month) to $45.00 per hour ($1080/day or $32,400/month). That's 270k - 390k/year...after tax money... For high income earner, that's close to 560k to 810k before tax income. This can get really expensive if a plan isn't put in place early. Fruit for thought. #criticalillnessinsurance #dementia #alzheimersdisease #personalcare #longtermcareinsurance #financialplanning

When we look at avoiding hospitalisation in our elderly loved ones, 🧠Dementia and Cognitive Impairment🧠 come up as being two of the more common reasons. In fact, 1 in 4 hospital beds is occupied by dementia patients in the UK. The reasons for hospital admissions among people with dementia include 🔹acute illness 🔹poorer function 🔹malnutrition and hydration 🔹or delirium For some, this is caused by a lack of diagnosis or recognition of on-set dementia, inadequate support, social isolation, illness or infection, or plainly forgetting how or when to eat, drink or medicate. We know you want to keep your mum or dad out of hospital for as long as possible, even if they are living with dementia or another type of cognitive impairment. A few things you can do: 🔹Visit the GP with your loved one and ask about what you can implement at home to assist Mum and Dad 🔹Seek social community hubs, like daycare centres, for fun activities and time away from the home environment 🔹Find out about Home Care services, like Home Instead 🔹Having fresh drink water easily accessible 🔹Healthier meal options, particularly at times of the day when Mum and Dad don’t want to cook for themselves 🔹A time when you can go for a walk together and enjoy simple exercise Do you have any tried and tested tips for keeping your loved ones safe, well and out of hospital? We'd love to hear them. #Dementia #CognitiveImpairment #HomeInstead #HomeInsteadUK #InHomeCare #Hospitalisation #Elderly #Seniors #CaringForSeniors

One in nine Americans aged 65 and older has Alzheimer's dementia, resulting in the increased demand of family caregivers to step into a role they are not financially or mentally prepared for. Now more than ever, it is time to improve the future for all caregivers, through advocating with our government officials to ensure they are protected and supported, to build awareness of the gaps in support, and to recognize that each caregiver is a human navigating their own trials and tribulations of life. It's time to do this together. At Otsuka, we are endlessly committed to caregivers, through advocating for more visibility and support, through providing tangible tools to make a meaningful impact and address the daily needs, and through recognizing the caregivers amongst our employees and providing caregiver specific benefits to those who need them. The untold cost of caregiving is one that must be talked about. Read more with Otsuka Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer John Kraus feature in Medical Economics:
