📈 With 8,711 small businesses per 100,000 people, our state is a hotbed of entrepreneurial activity! But let's talk about the bigger picture. While more Black women are stepping into entrepreneurship, they face unique challenges, especially when it comes to access to capital. The 2023 State of Black Business report revealed that only 3% of companies owned by Black women make it past the five-year mark. One thing is clear… Black women are the fastest-growing demographic when it comes to starting new businesses. All they need is access to the right resources, opportunities, mentorship and capital. 👩🏽💻 This is everything we are doing at MMA.  But we aren’t nearly done! Cracks in the Foundation: Philanthropy’s Role in Reparations for Black People in the DMV details how the disparities in areas like education, income, employment and housing for Black residents in the District of Columbia, southern Maryland, and northern Virginia areas (commonly known as the DMV) are not random or natural occurrences but are a string of conscious choices that repeatedly harmed communities. Using publicly available quantitative and qualitative research, the report details how the great wealth that made local philanthropy possible harmed the region’s Black residents in four distinct sectors: media, housing, employment, and healthcare. It also provides a framework for foundations to not only understand their past, but how they may start acknowledging and addressing these harms with community residents. An investment in the Center for Economic Inclusion is an investment in people who are changing policies and practices, increasing wages and working to improve spend with Black, Indigenous, Latine and Asian-owned businesses. Now is the time!

Data is key. Thank you to the Giving Gap for sharing this report today. I am sharing because it is that important to communicate and comprehend! See key finding below but please download the report also because there is so much you need to know! -Despite their unwavering commitment to addressing our country's greatest social challenges, Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth. -Passion and commitment don't pay the bills Despite their dedication, many leaders need to supplement their nonprofit income with additional jobs due to financial constraints (62%). -Black nonprofits need to keep the lights on The top need identified by these organizations is financial support for general operations (97%), highlighting the importance of grants and contributions. -Money is key, but it isn't everything Success is not solely attributed to financial support. Leaders highlighted their strong skill sets, spiritual practices, and support networks as crucial factors. #BackBlack #Blacknonprofits #collectivegiving #collectivepower
