This week’s Powerball jackpot has jumped to $100 after five consecutive Powerball lotteries were drawn without a division one winner, an eye-watering sum of money and the sixth-biggest jackpot in Australian lottery history. Although half of Australian adults are expected to buy a ticket, however, the odds of winning the top prize are incredibly slim. In 2022, I wrote a piece for SMARTdaily about luck and interviewed Professor Richard Wiseman about the topic. Professor Wiseman is a leading British psychologist and researcher who headed a groundbreaking scientific investigation to uncover the truth about luck, with the results published in his 2004 book, The Luck Factor. Over 10 years he conducted interviews with 400 male and female volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life, and what he determined is that luck isn’t due to karma or coincidence. Lucky people, often without knowing it, generate their good fortune via four basic principles: creating and noticing chance opportunities; making “lucky” decisions by listening to their intuition; creating self-fulfilling prophesies via positive expectations; and adopting a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good. When it comes to the lottery, however, Professor Wiseman told me that there’s a big difference between luck and chance and that winning the lottery is a “chance event”; something we have no control over other than buying a ticket. In good news, however, you can learn to be lucky. As part of his research, Professor Wiseman created experiments to examine whether good luck increases by getting people to think and behave like they are lucky. The results were dramatic. Eighty per cent of people were happier and more satisfied with their lives, and perhaps most importantly, they were luckier. Unlucky people had become lucky, and lucky people had become even luckier. I'm a nerd and drove 4.5 hours each way one day before Christmas to pick up a foosball table at a very good deal (I played way too much foosball in college). Christmas and the days following led up to a first-ever Loucks family foosball tournament. I thought I would come away with at least second-place, most likely losing to my 17 year old, who has shown exceptional foosball prowess. To my surprise and chagrin, I was eliminated in the first round by my 14 year old, who played surprisingly well. I even negated a point he scored on a rule technicality in an effort to secure a win. Anyway, a new year often comes with new perspective. One if which is losing to your son who you thought you would beat in foosball. But here's another thought, as it relates to time spent with family, losing included: It takes time to build anything of real value, not the least of which is family relationships and memories. In fact, these are the most important. The most precious memories are those we made time for today. Stack up memories with your kids day by day and you’ll look back with gratitude and joy. Stack up distractions day by day that kept you from making memories with your kids and that look back will feel much different. Use the time you have today to make a memory, however small and simple, with your kid. It’s not always about the big event or expensive trip. It’s more about daily connection. I wanted to share a recent initiative by Sports4Kids-CA, the nonprofit founded by my son, Arden Pala. In collaboration with Eco Sports LLC, they've recently provided underprivileged kids at an elementary school the opportunity to experience Pickle Ball. Beyond introducing them to the sport, these students were also given essential sports equipment, ensuring a continued engagement. From its inception two years ago with just one elementary school, Arden's vision has now reached four schools. His proactive approach to securing partnerships with high-profile sponsors such as Dick's Sporting Goods and Barrons Grocery Stores has been instrumental in amplifying the impact of Sport4Kids. 📊 Some noteworthy data: * Physically active are 15% more likely to attend college (source: The Aspen Institute : https://lnkd.in/dNca7U67) * Student athletes get up to 40% higher test scores (source: Again The Aspen Institute) * Teens who participate in team sports are less likely to use drugs, smoke cigarettes and carry weapons.
