The bipartisan leadership of the Congressional Neuroscience Caucus, led by Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Morgan Luttrell (R-TX), Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), are circulating a Dear Colleague sign-on letter to the House Appropriations Committee in support of the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative. This initiative will fund the development of technologies which are critical in unlocking the invisible wounds associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI). At TBI Action Alliance, we strongly support the BRAIN Initiative and are committed to driving TBI research and innovation forward. Take action now by urging your members of Congress to support promising brain research at the link below: https://lnkd.in/g9icurc8 #BRAINInitiative #TBIAction #TBI #TBIActionAlliance #BrainHealth

The University of Edinburgh is now part of the Target ALS Postmortem Core sites, further enriching our collaborative network dedicated to accelerating ALS research. Known for their pioneering work in motor neuron disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the University of Edinburgh has made significant contributions to the field, including the development of the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS), an essential tool in assessing ALS-frontotemporal dementia (ALS-FTD). This partnership enhances our Postmortem Core's ability to distribute both ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) tissue to the global research community. With access to a wide range of biological samples from across Scotland, the University of Edinburgh contributes over 130 historical ALS cases to our collection, alongside new cases as they become available. The addition of the University of Edinburgh further solidifies our commitment to advancing ALS research through radical collaboration and the sharing of critical resources. Congratulations to University of Michigan researchers Lynda Lisabeth and Lewis Morgenstern on receiving the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) for their work on stroke health disparities in Mexican Americans. The $5 million grant will fund the Michigan Public Health/University of Michigan Medical School research team's BASIC Study (Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi) to reach a 32-year milestone and expand the study group to 35-to-44-year-olds whose incidence of stroke is increasing. Enrolling over 15,000 participants over the last 25 years, the BASIC Study has provided insights into health inequities by examining outcomes, recurrence, deaths and other factors amongst stroke patients in Hispanic and non-Hispanic white populations in Corpus Christi, Texas. In this next 5-year research cycle, they will investigate outcome variance within the Mexican American population to understand contributing factors to why some people recover after a stroke and others do not. https://myumi.ch/Pkmx5

I always urge students to explore multiple career fields to learn what they like, love, & dislike. What you dislike is the most important to know. I learned that for me, the chance of a discovery is what made my career choices exciting for me. I hope Brain Science is part of that exploration for many. Many basic Brain Science discoveries power better Brain Therapies. A lot of techniques now are advanced enough to provide reliable information at the level of the individual patient. Decades of sweat by many got this field here! Now is, indeed, an exciting time in Brain Science, and it is only going to get better! https://lnkd.in/gjvRYjQt

The cortex is the outermost part of the brain that governs a lot of functions, including language, memory, and reasoning. Therefore, it is widely studied and is an important topic of interest, especially in the context of neurological diseases. Dr. William Zeiger, Assistant Professor-in-Residence at the UCLA Department of Neurology, aims to pursue this endeavor by studying how cortical circuits are affected in stroke and Parkinson's Disease.
