As 2024 comes to a close, I’m been taking the past week to breathe, reflect and plan the year ahead. There has been so much change over the past year, most notably the drastic tax Budget at Halloween 👻 but there is lots of positive activity (and datarooms waiting) in the New Year! To kick off 2025 with purpose, I’ve decided to take on an ambitious challenge: rowing 6,000 metres every day in January—a total of 186,000 metres! Ambitious meaning that until Sunday past, I hadn’t rowed on the water since October and my erg has been gathering dust, barely getting 2k a week of use 🚣♀️ My goal is to raise funds for BDO Northern Ireland charity partner Air Ambulance Northern Ireland, a charity that provides life-saving care across Northern Ireland. As you know, the Air Ambulance here relies heavily on donations to operate, responding to critical emergencies when every second counts. Donations go directly to the costs of running the helicopter service. That might be fuel, a flight suit, specialist hangar equipment, a flight helmet or any one of a huge range of costs that we have to fund. The only thing more satisfying than applying a RAPAID sticker perfectly straight and without a single air bubble is knowing that a passer by seeing that sticker could save a life! 🙌🏽 The RAPAID stickers in the front and back windows of a cab are a really important part of each installation because they enable members of the public or emergency services to identify which cabs are carrying a RAPAID emergency bandages kit. Just listened to AdviceUK on #YouAndYours - the impact they have and the challenges of funding at the moment. Have a listen if you didn't time your lunch as fortuitiously as me. So true of the whole voluntary and community sector, and more so than ever, it seems. Massive demand, not enough and no certainty of funding. I wish we (the country) would better recognise the role #smallbutvital charities play in maintaining the basic fabric of society. Like, there's never any question of whether there will be money to pay the electric bill for traffic lights. Why isn't the voluntary sector like that? It's not a luxury. It's basic. And traffic lights can be turned on and off. Charities are about people and relationships, and when those are lost, they are not easily or quickly replaced. Gagagahhhh #charity #funding
