I came across an article today that got me thinking about company culture.
The article talked about major companies in Germany, like Siemens, Adidas, and Zalando, investing huge amounts of money into new office buildings. They're designing these spaces to attract top talent and boost innovation, with features like open-plan offices and shared workspaces. The idea is that by creating a more modern and open environment, they can encourage more collaboration and fresh ideas, just like some of the big tech companies in the U.S. are doing.
This made me consider how much fancy offices and impressive buildings drive company culture.
I’ve always felt that while a nice office can make a difference, it's not the core of what makes a workplace great. The real difference comes from the people, the leaders who set the tone, the investment in developing teams, and the time spent building genuine connections and trust.
It's about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and is encouraged to contribute, whether they're in a shiny new building or a more traditional workspace.
I think a nice office environment is great, but it’s the people inside who create the culture. It’s about how we lead, how we support each other, and how we build an atmosphere where everyone feels they belong. That’s what really makes a place somewhere people want to be, day in and day out.
What are your thoughts on the the impact a fancy, glitzy office can have on a company’s culture?

Having all these great amenities at your place of work sounds great in theory but I wonder if this will have a lasting positive impact on how people view having to be at the office each day.
OR
Will this be more of a fad and turn into a last ditch effort on convincing people the office is the place to be?
IMO, the best way to do this is to provide opportunity, challenges, and growth. That will attract and retain top talent. Not pickleball.

I say what needs saying about the Future of Work/Living. I also help teams coordinate remote & in-office Kadences (pun intended, it’s where I work and what we do!).
Are companies having offsites or onsites these days?
Because I’m talking to more curating events AT their offices rather than elsewhere.
And I have a theory as to why:
They already have the space!!!
End of post lol…
(Kidding)
Here’s my real theory:
For companies that care, their offices are cultural shrines.
And while culture is NOT a place, spaces matters to culture and has across the entirety of human history.
So yes, my theory is that companies want to have moments that matter within their cultural shrines.
Are companies having offsites? Yes.
But if there’s any reason that offices aren’t going anywhere anytime soon—it’s because they are cultural shrines, places to gather.
Whether you like offices or not…I dare you to disagree!
Comment below.
Throughout my career I have oscillated between having a private office, working in an open space and sitting in a cubicle. None of my workplace settings were in any way correlated to my stature in a company. I had a private office as a summer intern and, much later, managed direct reports from a cubicle.
In my experience, the respect given to productive workers is far more important than the physical setting. Once, a disruptive co-worker who was harassing peers (for which the harasser was eventually fired), was given a corner office in order to "isolate" the problem. Most people will immediately recognize the negative effect that had on the morale of those left behind. On the other hand, someone in a highly respected position can gain from being in an open setting. Accessibility and visibility can be a virtue.
Imagine this:
You're invited into someone's office. There are dull walls, fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, and a chill to the room.
Not entirely inviting.
On the other hand, you step into a space filled with warmth, natural light, and light jazz playing in the background.
Which one would you prefer to meet in?
Our work or meeting spaces matter for productivity, creativity, and connectivity with others.
"What does your ideal office look like?" was the question I was asked during the hiring process at Barlean's.
My response?
A warm, coffee shop vibe. With jazz, warm lighting, and chairs for people to welcome people. (The supreme choice would be a beach with palm trees 😝)
I'm happy to report, THIS is the current vibe. (The warm jazz vibe) ☕
The result? Stimulation, productivity, connection, and hospitality.

Surrounding yourself with beautiful plants supports your mental health.
If you need a few moments of serenity during your work day, take a few deep breaths and gaze into your plants.
Here's a step-by-step, 5-minute meditation you can practice with a plant:
1. Preparation (1 minute)
Choose a plant you feel drawn to. This could be a houseplant, a tree, or any kind of flora nearby.
Sit or stand comfortably near the plant. If possible, place yourself so you can easily see or touch the plant without straining.
Take a few deep breaths to center yourself. Inhale slowly through your nose and exhale through your mouth. As you settle in, begin to clear your mind of other thoughts, focusing only on the present moment.
2. Observing (1 minute)
Gently observe the plant. Notice its colors, shapes, and any movement like the rustling of leaves.
Pay attention to details: the texture of the bark or the surface of the leaves, the way the leaves are arranged, and how they might sway slightly even with a soft breeze.
3. Connecting (1 minute)
If you can, gently place your hands on part of the plant, perhaps the soil around it or the leaves. Feel the texture and temperature.
Imagine your breath flowing towards the plant with each inhale and back to you with each exhale. Envision a shared breath that connects you with the plant.
4. Deepening Awareness (1 minute)
Close your eyes and visualize the plant. Picture its roots growing deep into the earth, drawing up water and nutrients.Reflect on the life force shared between all living things, the interdependence of life and the ways in which the plant contributes to the air you breathe and the beauty it adds to the world.
5. Gratitude and Closing (1 minute)
Open your eyes if they were closed. Take a moment to feel gratitude for the life of the plant and what it offers to you and the environment.Take a few more deep breaths, each time imagining sending gratitude to the plant. As you end the meditation, gently wiggle your fingers and toes, bringing movement back to your body. When you feel ready, rise slowly or begin to move on with your day, carrying with you a sense of peace and connection.
This short meditation can help ground you and deepen your appreciation for the natural world, providing a calm and centered start or break within your day.

If you don't work in nature, you might be missing out.
Whether creating or improving your space for your team at HQ, home office or settling in at a regular coffee shop, studies show the environment could change your output.
The idea is called biophilia. It's just a fancy word that means "loving nature." And when you're near plants or can see outside through oversized windows, you feel less stress and smile more. Some even think better and come up with super cool ideas!
Intuit made its office look like a little park. Plants are everywhere—even on the walls! It also created unique places where people can sit outside and talk on the phone or enjoy the fresh air.
If you're interested in incorporating biophilic design in your workplace in the Toronto area, consider checking out Promise Supply Plants🪴🌵🌱 and contact David King. Known for their innovative approaches to office design, particularly in creating nature-friendly work environments.
Pair your plants with ecologicca, which is on a mission to connect your health and your environment anywhere in the world. Contact Laura Gabor.
Every Saturday, I'll share businesses doing cool things like Ecologicca and Promise Supply Plants.
Let me know in the comments what companies I should feature next.
Today's post was inspired by an HR Brew article titled, "What's biophilia, and what role should it play in your HR strategy?" Check out the link to the article in the comments.
Enjoy your Saturday inside or outdoors. 🌵 🏡
