Hospice care offers comfort and support during a serious illness, focusing on quality of life rather than curative treatment. While it’s often associated with end-of-life situations, a hospice stay can last for months or even years. This highlights the importance of a flexible estate plan that addresses not only what happens after you pass but also the practicalities of your financial and personal life during an extended hospice journey. It sounds like CMS is taking steps to tighten oversight of hospice services in certain states to address concerns about fraud, waste, and abuse. Here’s a summary of the key points: Expanded Prepayment Review: CMS will start reviewing claims before payment in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas starting this September. This means they’ll check the claims to ensure they meet all the necessary requirements before any funds are disbursed. Initial Review Volumes: Initially, CMS will review a small number of claims to minimize disruption for providers who are compliant with regulations. The volume of reviews will be adjusted based on the results of these initial checks. Consequences for Noncompliance: Providers who are found to be noncompliant might face more extensive reviews or other administrative actions. Additional Resources: For more information on hospice coverage and guidelines, CMS has provided a link to their resource page. If you’re a provider or involved in hospice care, it’s a good idea to stay informed and ensure all practices are up to date with CMS requirements. This will help mitigate the risk of extended reviews or other administrative issues. #medicalbilling #medbillservices #nationwide #HealthcareBilling #MedicalCoding #ClaimSubmission #InsuranceBilling #BillingAndCoding #HealthcareRevenue #HealthcareCompliance #InsuranceReimbursement #billingspecialist

The Foglight - Hospice: You Can Start Too Soon Issue #8 February 2024 In This Issue: Hospice: You Can Start Too Soon Should hospice be started as soon as possible? Sharing my experience with starting hospice care for my mother, I highlight the issue of getting the start of the timing right when you still want to see your doctors. In general, hospice is started too late. On the other hand, just because someone is hospice eligible, they don’t have to start right away. There’s a need for individualized care based on the patient's wishes and stage of illness. Hospice care plays a vital role in providing comfort, dignity, and support to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses. Hospice use prevalence among Medicare beneficiaries was highest in Utah (60.7%) and lowest in New York (24.7%), showing geographic variation. 💲 Expenditures for the Medicare hospice benefit skyrocketed 🚀 from $2.2 billion in 1998 to $22.4 billion in 2020, indicating increasing demand. However, access to these services can be challenging due to various barriers, including reimbursement issues and misconceptions about hospice care. At our associations, we are committed to advocating for policies and initiatives that improve access to hospice care, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to receive compassionate end-of-life care. 🌎 We are working towards a future where hospice care is accessible to all who need it. #hospice #hospicecare #homehealth #hospicecareagency #medicare #dignity #westvirginia #healthcare
