When do you need two resumes to hit an Oil & Gas job target? When you have technical AND management goals. For instance, a completions engineer might want to target high-level technical engineering roles as an advisor, SME or consultant. At the same time, they might also want to break into a management role where they need to highlight their skills in collaboration, supervision, and/or departmental direction. Sometimes you want to be more in the weeds and other times you’ll want to be more high level. The tricky thing is that if you try to walk the line between both with one resume, you may come across as a 50% fit for both types of roles. Have you run into this before? A Letter to Potential Employer! All the details of our work experience/s are written and stated in our Resume. So, kindly refrain asking a question or stating such as "Ah! So you don't have experience in Oil & Gas/etc.?". Yes we do not have an Oil & Gas/etc. experience since our previous companies have no project/work in such field. But, it doesn't mean that we are not capable of doing our job well. Because we will not reached this years of experience by doing nothing in our previous organizations. We worked for a longer period of time with our previous employers for a good reasons. Otherwise, they will not allow us to stay if we are not competent to do our job. That is the evidence. So, If you will not give us a chance to work in different industry such as Oil & Gas/etc., we will never have it in our entire career. Always remember, no one is born working in such direct field. It is just so frustrating to be judged! But what I can say is, you missed the chance of having an employee that is a potential asset of the company. 😉

I always wondered why is it so hard to get into the Oil and Gas industry when applying for job. You could meet all the requirement but then Oil and Gas experience is preferred or required and their goes you change to be selected for the position. In reality most job junctions are the same in all fields that you may or may not have the experience in, just terminology differences is what you have to learn and you will be able to succeed in any field or industry if give the chance.

This was written since November 2013 and never posted it... I have always wondered how recruitment into the Oil & Gas industry is done. My expectation normally is that any regular position open in any industry can be filled by a competent candidate, for instance, positions in Accounting & Finance, Mgt., HR, Admin., Sales etc. But how come in the Nigerian Oil & Gas industry vacancies exist in the public domain for-information-only! and not to be acted upon. Except for core technical positions in that industry that require a high level of hands-on experience, the competence required can still be inculcated into suitably qualified persons who possess prerequisite academic and educational qualifications. l also wonder, as exclusive, high-tech and challenging the industry is, why there's virtually no training programmes accessible to numerous people where affordable trainings and certifications can be done to adequately prepare one to handle challenges of the job in that industry, like what you have in telecoms/IT industry where you can acquire eg. Cisco, Microsoft, SUN, Project Mgt. etc. training /certifications that can afford one an opportunity to launch a career into the oil & gas industry. I am aware that there are various aspects of work functions, even in the core areas like well engineering, pipeline mgt., drilling, automation, instrumentation etc that a training/certification can give one a leverage to partake in the excellent work environment available to the Oil & Gas industry. Given the above scenario, what does it take to join this industry? This is the question on the lips of many interested persons. As a recruiter, kindly give your opinion.
