Here I am on CBC's The Current discussing my The Walrus feature on academic accommodations. Seanna Takacs, Ph.D. offers her take, which I don't entirely agree with. More training for underpaid, exhausted sessionals? Nah, give us more resources and support. Is it really good pedagogy to record your classes and make them available online? Sometimes, but also sometimes not. The magic of a good class discussion is that it happens live, in real time. Students can't think together if they're not actually together. And togetherness, post-pandemic, is more vital than ever. https://lnkd.in/gCvNX9wE

I love this. And perhaps it provides food for thought as to what we measure and what success means in our education system. What we measure and celebrate is where we place our attention and energy. Are those the things that will prepare our kids the navigate the unmapped terrain of “the future”. Literacy and numeracy- yes all important and so are many, many other things that we don’t create time for in an already crammed curriculum. As I listen to this, I hear a call to reset and get clear on the purpose of education. The education system as a whole is dealing with far too much change. New initiatives being added on, and nothing being removed which creates a paradigm where it tries to be everything to everyone. When I ask parents and educators alike what the purpose of education is I get a million different responses…. There’s no congruence or clarity. I believe the system as a whole needs to pause, breathe and reset. Get all parts working synchronously for the same thing rather than all running their own agenda and pulling in different directions. With alignment comes CLEAR accountability and we simply don’t have that in our education system

1moThis was an awesome interview! Lots to grapple with in terms of best practice/evidence of impact regarding accommodations. Without a doubt, this situation is absolutely the "outcome of the neoliberal classroom agenda" as stated during the CBC interview. Well done!
