New York City’s more than one million buildings are responsible for nearly 70% of the city’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In a world grappling with escalating urgency to respond to the climate crisis, we stand at a critical juncture to decarbonize buildings and construction. Lothrop Associates Architects is committed to understanding and following guidelines to reduce embodied carbon and waste in NYC’s built environment. Goal 1: Divert Construction and Deconstruction Material from Disposal Reduce C&D waste by 75 percent for all projects. Goal 2: Reuse and Recycle Concrete and Soil Reuse and/or recycle a minimum of 95 percent of the discarded concrete and soil generated by a construction or deconstruction project. Friends and supporters, I am totally GEEKED about the new material reuse guidance document that was just released this week!!! The Project Manager’s Guide to Material Reuse in Commercial Buildings is the first of its kind to be customized to the nuances and challenges of the commercial building environment. It’s the culmination of months of research, collaboration and synthesis, led by Olivia Cashman (Hennepin County Environment) and Simona Fischer (MSR Design) and supported by @Liz Kutschke (University of Minnesota College of Design CSBR) and myself (Doors Unhinged). The whole point of this was to create formal structures and processes that legitimize reuse and deconstruction, so that it can be more easily implemented and become more mainstream. What I believe to be new and innovative is the reuse and deconstruction spec suite that includes Division 01 Material Reuse, Division 02 Selective Deconstruction, and the Reuse & Deconstruction Action Plan, though there is importance guidance throughout the document. Hennepin-University Partnership (HUP) Webinar: Building material reuse in commercial projects Tuesday, July 30, 11am-12pm CST, virtual In 2023, Hennepin County Environment and Energy initiated a collaborative project to create a toolkit with architectural specification language. The goal was to assist owners, architects, and contractors in designing, building, and operating buildings with reduced waste by incorporating reclaimed materials and deconstruction practices. Working alongside the University of Minnesota’s Center for Sustainable Building Research, MSR Design, and Doors Unhinged, the project team conducted a literature review, developed best practices for sourcing and installing reclaimed materials, created specification language templates, and gathered expert feedback.
