VR/AR headsets are starting to get good (Vision Pro next month!!) But what people sometimes forget is that the greatest experiences the smartphone can offer have not been made yet. In fact smartphones have • just now • reached almost 90% of human population. 7 billion devices with gyroscopes/cameras/touchscreens & pretty universal UX. Most people playing a game on their phone have never played a video game (on any platform!) before. This is our main focus at Jadu right now: Use camera/gyroscope/touchscreens to create a smartphone experience beyond scrolling 2D content. “Fighting Game” doesn’t work for everyone (yet) but the interactions we’re trying to build will have many app/imp lications.

https://lnkd.in/dXhQScsb Meta's Orion Smart Glasses represent a significant leap forward in augmented reality (AR) technology. Unveiled as a prototype, Orion is not just an iteration of existing smart glasses but a precursor to what could become the next ubiquitous computing platform, potentially overtaking smartphones. These glasses are designed to bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds, allowing users to interact with digital content superimposed onto their real-world environment. Orion's capabilities are groundbreaking; they include a large holographic display that enables users to see 3D content and experiences anywhere in their physical space. The integration of contextual AI allows the glasses to understand and interact with the world around the user, providing a seamless and intuitive experience. This AI can anticipate needs and offer assistance without the user having to navigate through menus or use voice commands. The design of Orion is focused on comfort and wearability for all-day use, both indoors and outdoors. Meta has emphasized the importance of these glasses being as unobtrusive as possible, maintaining the look and feel of a regular pair of glasses while packing in advanced technology. This includes gesture, voice, and eye-tracking controls, along with a neural interface that uses a wristband to measure biometric signals for hands-free and voice-free interaction. Meta's approach to making Orion a reality involves achieving affordability through scale, aiming to price the consumer version comparably to affordable phones and laptops. While the exact release date and price point are not yet confirmed, the company's goal is to make AR technology accessible to a wider audience, paving the way for a future where AR glasses are as common as smartphones are today. Orion represents a vision of the future where our digital lives are seamlessly integrated with our physical reality, offering a new level of presence and connectivity. As Meta continues to iterate and refine this technology, it's clear that Orion Smart Glasses could very well be at the forefront of the next major shift in personal computing.

I've been deep in research and haven't published in awhile, but this new essay sums up some of the futures analysis I've been doing on key technologies and systems. In this essay, I explore the future of smartphones and what might replace them, looking a decade into the future to 2035. While smartphones are incredibly versatile and have become essential to modern life, there is growing speculation that they may soon be surpassed by new technologies like augmented and virtual reality (AR/MR), folding screens, or even personal AI assistants. I discuss the potential of these innovations, including their benefits and challenges, particularly when it comes to user comfort, health, and usability. Ultimately, I believe the future might not involve a new gadget but rather the gradual disappearance of technology as we know it, replaced by seamless, efficient, and unobtrusive digital experiences that enhance our lives without demanding constant interaction. #future #ux #ixd #hci

Meta's Orion AR glasses signal the beginning of the end of the smartphone era and the beginning of the AR glasses era. AR smartglasses based on the Orion prototype will replace smartphones like iPhone. The Meta Smart Glasses show that people are willing to wear computers in the form of smart glasses. They just have to look good. That's why Meta's partnership with EssilorLuxottica is so significant. We can envision a future where the capabilities of the Orion are distributed across multiple designs under the umbrella of Luxottica’s eyewear brands. I am biased though. I would wear the Orions daily in its current form factor. Would you? Or would they have to be even thinner for you? For deeper analysis, read my latest article on Games of Strategy - an emerging technology newsletter with 10,000+ subscribers. I go through why AR failed to become mainstream on smartphones and HMDs and why it will be different this time around with Orion and its descendants. #meta #augmentedreality #AR #orion
