💭 WHY I ❤ RECRUITING BRAND MANAGERS! (Long post!) It’s a been a good day! 😀 I just placed a cracking candidate in a really exciting Brand Manager role, with a remit to drive trial & penetration for a well-known consumer healthcare brand. One of those roles where the you understand the size of the prize 🏆 and you can turn your hand to building a winning marketing strategy. As a recruiter specialising in BRAND MANAGEMENT and MARKETING, I’ve worked with candidates who look after brands in any possible product category you can think of. Just yesterday, I commented on a LinkedIn post by someone I placed as an SBM in computer games 27 years ago! A prelude to a glittering career in the gaming industry. What is it about recruiting Brand Managers that energises me … 💥 Success driven: Brand Managers tend to be super positive, and play a pivotal role within their companies. They make stuff happen! Sure, they spend company money 💷, but they drive real revenue growth with their strategy and plans, often enhancing the value of a business big time. 🎭 Strategic, Analytical AND Creative: Most Brand Managers I meet have a blend of strategic and creative thinking skills, with a deep understanding of their industry. They have their finger 👉🏻 on the consumer pulse, and it’s always interesting to discuss what they are doing with their brands and why. 🤔 Innovators and Trendsetters:  Keeping a brand relevant in a dynamic market needs innovative ideas.  Brand managers are great at identifying trends, understanding consumer & market issues, and using this to frame brand strategy.  Conversations with brand people always make you think! 🤝🏻 Great Collaborators:  Brand managers are invariably people focused, working collaboratively with every team in the business, and all those ‘creative’ agency types, to achieve their goals. They’re great at making connections, and interviews are always a real two-way discussion. Awkward silences are rare. 📚 Passionate Storytellers:  Brand Managers know how to sell themselves in interviews. They're used to telling compelling stories about their brands that resonate with the target audience.  The role is all about capturing the essence of a brand to create emotional connections with consumers. And finally … As an ex-Brand Manager myself 😀, working with a team of other ex-Brand Managers turned recruiters, you get to remember how much fun it was like to 'own' and run a brand. Maybe a little nostalgia here and there, and dare I say it, a little bit of vicarious pride when you see your candidates’ work on shelf in Tesco or on the TV. This trend I'm seeing for the types of mid-level "Employer Brand Manager" roles people have approached me about lately is making me concerned. 😱 Either companies are chancing their luck, or some serious education is needed for the people writing these job adverts to build understanding of whats actually involved in the requirements being asked for, and the time they take to deliver. Even if delivered at the most basic of levels. What I fear is happening, is that some poor souls are walking into these gigs out of desperation in a tight employment market, and will burn out in the near future when they realise that what's being asked of 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 just isn't feasible. 𝘐𝘧 they are doable (and it's a big "if"), then it'll be to an extremley rudimentary MVP (minimal viable product) level. If the people hiring are cool with this then crack on. But be 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 these expectations are aligned before potentially setting yourself up for extremely stressful failure. 😩 🥴 😵💫 Please call me out if you think I'm wrong here. Maybe its me? Maybe I'm the one who needs to check myself on this but I don't see how, in these roles that are being advertised as, "stand alone," with the need to be, "scrappy," and, "resourceful," someone could deliver all of this to anywhere near a decent, meaningful, impactful standard. 𝘌𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 if the expectation is that they all need to be delivered simoultaneously!: • EVP ownership - research, create, launch, embed across the entire people experience and measure. (So straight off the bat this isn't just an 'Employer Brand Manager' then?)    • Internal comms to drive colleague engagement and leading internal event planning. (Ah. So Internal Comms Manager, too?)    • Employer brand creation including brand design. (So you need a professional creative, also?)    • Content strategy including persona research and creation, hands-on creative design, asset production, distribution and measurement.    • Recruitment marketing campaign planning, activation, and measurement,  including external events coordination and attendance.    • Maintenance of innovative and compelling content on our social platforms, and career site / blog.    • Managing entries for employee-related industry awards.    • Measurement framework building, monitoring, and reporting on a monthly and campaign-by-campaign basis to peers across the business and departmental heads in a way that demonstates business impact.    • Etc... Remember. All these have been advertised as individual contributor roles. Don't get me wrong. I genuinely love a challenge. But c'mon, people... Trying to hire three people in one role that's paying c. £40 - 60k??? Is anyone else seeing a problem with this picture? 🤔 ---- (By the way, please don't be shy.
