Another inspiring case study from #AJRetroFitLive This time the rejuvenation of the Rylands building (former Debenhams) in the centre of Manchester, also focussing on the reuse of both the building and materials. Kiru Balson described the work of the Max Fordham LLP team who worked towards the challenge of achieving 30% reuse during the refurbishment set as a planning condition, asking themselves the questions: 1. What can we realistically reuse in the same scheme. 2. What about the stuff we don’t need? It has been 3 years since this left-leaning article was published criticizing John Alle for trying to save Parking Structure 3 adjacent to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. It would cost $3 million to bring the structure up to code and $3.5 million to demolish it for affordable housing. Three years later, the proposed housing would cost $1 million a unit and may never be built. But here is what Santa Monica City thought at the time: "For Leonora Camner, executive director of the non-profit advocacy group Abundant Housing LA and member of the Santa Monica Housing Commission, this project ticked all the boxes. The site is in a dense, walkable area with easy access to jobs, not just in Santa Monica but also in downtown Los Angeles via the Expo Line. Even on the incredibly divisive Housing Commission where nearly every project meets divided opinions, Camner said the demolition of Parking Structure 3 was met with near-universal approval. She told Motherboard, “Almost everybody was supportive of Parking Structure 3 becoming affordable housing.” In contrast, Mayor Bass' ED1 is producing thousands of affordable housing units at $300,000 a unit, and no public funds are required. Absolutely. It’s a shameful indictment of our construction practices in the UK, the housing association, cladding manufacturers and Loss Prevention Council who we rely on for certification. They all have blood on their hands. We now need to get back to fire safety taking precedent over all other considerations such as energy efficiency, aesthetics and margin of profit. Lives always have to come first. As an Insurance industry we rely heavily on the fire safety data sheets when making judgments about the combustibility or otherwise of cladding when we set our rates, capacity and ultimately acceptability. We play our part too but if we have bent data, the cladding manufacturers and the LPC are tying our hands behind our backs. We expect and demand better

I’m pleased to announce that our annual review 2023-2024 has been published and it’s been an outstanding year for our UK business as we continue to see the success of our long-term growth strategy. In the UK alone, our net revenue rose by 19.5 percent over the year to reach £483m, reflecting our strong performance across all sectors, which is a testament to the diverse talent and expertise we bring to a wide range of industries.   This is particularly important during a time of changing priorities from a new government.
