As we continue to celebrate Small Business week, we shine a spotlight on Moe Ari Brown, LMFT. Discover how Moe harnesses the strength of SimplePractice to propel their business forward. Q: Tell us a little bit about your practice. A: I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who founded Transcendent Therapy & Consulting, LLC in 2019. I specialize in love, LGBTQIA+ issues, and gender-affirming care, offering holistic therapy that considers all aspects of my clients' well-being. As the Love and Connection Expert for Hinge, I also consult on diversity, equity, and inclusion and serve on the board of It Gets Better, advocating for LGBTQIA+ youth worldwide. Q: What specific challenges have you faced as a small business owner running your own practice? A: Moving from Illinois to Georgia for my practice presented challenges, especially in setting up the right electronic medical record (EMR). Already paneled in Illinois, I needed an EMR with integrated telehealth features for my clients. SimplePractice took the guesswork out of opening a practice. Q: How do you feel you, as a small business owner, are impacting your community? A: Venturing into private practice has broadened my horizons beyond my past community experiences. With Transcendent Therapy and SimplePractice, I've reached clients exploring diverse topics like relationships, gender identity, and LGBTQ+ issues. My aim is to enrich everyday interactions with empathy and therapeutic value, whether through my practice, consulting, speaking engagements, or educational initiatives, fostering authenticity, belonging, and love in relationships. #SmallBusinessWeek #SimplePractice

It was so great to attend these online events hosted by Neurodiversity Celebration Week! I took notes during each event, and I'd like to share my key takeaways from each. "Neurodivergent & LGBTQIA+: The 'Double Rainbow' Intersection 🌈🌈" - Statistically, neurodivergent people are more likely to identify as LGBTQIA+ and both groups are more likely to experience mental health struggles. - Autistic LGBTQIA+ people are often infantilised, and have to jump through extra hoops to have our LGBTQIA+ identities taken seriously. - The concepts of neurodiversity and LGBTQIA+ identities have existed for a long time in many cultures across the globe, and is absolutely not a new thing. - Plenty of societal change still needs to be done to improve life for neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ people, as for all marginalised communities. - Intersectionality is so important for work around equality, diversity and inclusion. "Empowering Yourself as a Neurodivergent Woman in the Workplace" - Know your boundaries. Neurodivergent women are often people pleasers. You don’t always have to say yes to everything, saying no can be good for your mental health. When someone asks for something from you, you often don’t need to respond right away. Slow down and think about things before committing to them. If you don’t hold your boundaries, they won’t be respected. - Start to create a list of your successes and wins. They can be small, simple things (getting out of bed can be a win if you’re having a bad day!) Our brains are more likely to remember our failures than our successes, so recording our successes so we don’t forget them can be really powerful. - Take the time to understand your own neurodivergent profile, know your strengths and struggles, and lean into what you’re good at. - Advocate for yourself and others within your workplace. Don’t underestimate the sharing of lived experiences. Share your struggles without apologising. - For many people, the fear of embarrassment and shame is a massive barrier to asking for what they need. It's perfectly okay to ask for accommodations and support. Even if you don't feel comfortable disclosing a neurodivergent diagnosis, you can still share your strengths and weaknesses. - Every person has the power to make positive change in your career, brings something to the workplace, and deserves to enjoy the work you are doing. As a woman who is part of the double rainbow intersection, listening to the lived experiences of the panellists strongly resonated with me, and some really inspiring discussions were had. For anyone who wants to learn more about neurodiversity, I recommend visiting the NCW website to browse through their information and resources! https://lnkd.in/exRPG5ig #Neurodiversity #LGBTQIA #WomenInSTEM #Intersectionality

Neurodivergent (AuDHD + Dyscalculia) and gender-expansive coach helping organizations become neuro-inclusive and gender-affirming workplaces.
In my experience working with Neurodivergent women, Black, Indigenous, Latino/a/é, Asian, and other People of Color, and LGBTQ+ individuals, a common concern they share is the lack of discourse, visibility, and support helping teams, organizations, and communities meet the needs of LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and Trans and femme Neurodivergent people. Unfortunately, much of the research on neurodiversity has historically focused on middle-class, white, heterosexual males, leaving many Neurodivergent individuals without the support and accommodations they need. This has real consequences for Neurodivergent people who are also part of marginalized communities, as studies have shown that women, People of Color, and LGBTQ+ individuals are less likely to receive a diagnosis and access appropriate services and support. I can speak to the unique challenges of being Neurodivergent and also existing as Non-binary, Black, and Queer. I discovered my Neurodivergence (ADHD and Dyscalculia) late in life, and this journey was sparked only after I heard a Black woman speak openly and frankly about her experiences growing up with ADHD. For the first time, it felt like I had begun to understand myself and I could place my experiences in the proper context. I still vividly remember the first time I received treatment (I was nearing my 30th birthday), and I almost wept at work. I thought, “so this is what it’s like to feel safe? I’ve spent my whole life feeling unsafe.” Biased disgnostic criteria, stigma (among providers, educators, and employers) and outdated societal beliefs prevent more women, Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, and LGBTQ+ people from discovering and embracing our Neurodivergence, but I’m on a mission to change that. I am passionate about changing the conversation around neurodiversity to be more inclusive and affirming of diverse experiences. To help raise awareness, I have curated a list of over a dozen recent studies detailing the disparities and unique barriers for Neurodivergent women, Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, and LGBTQ+ individuals (link in the comments). Today, I speak, coach, and facilitate training for diverse organizations across the United States, inspiring others to embrace Intersectional Neurodiversity. #intersectionality #neurodivergent #intersectionalneurodiversity Alt text embedded in the image

🤔 How can we create a world where LGBTQ+ teens feel truly supported and understood? As a NYC educator transitioning into mental health therapy, I’ve dedicated myself to this question. It’s more than just acceptance; it’s about actively creating inclusive environments where these young individuals can thrive. 1️⃣Understanding Their World: LGBTQ+ teens navigate a complex landscape of identity formation and social pressures. It’s essential to understand their unique experiences to offer meaningful support. This means recognizing the diverse challenges they face, from societal stigma to personal struggles with self-acceptance. 2️⃣Creating Safe, Inclusive Spaces: Inclusion starts with education. Schools, businesses, and community organizations must strive to educate themselves and their members about LGBTQ+ issues. This fosters a culture of understanding and respect. Safe spaces where teens can express themselves without fear are crucial. These are environments where their identities are not just accepted but celebrated. 3️⃣Active Listening and Empathy: Empathy is the cornerstone of mental health support. It involves actively listening to their experiences and validating their feelings. As a clinician-in-training, I’ve seen the profound impact that genuine understanding and empathy can have on a teen’s mental well-being. 4️⃣Tailored Mental Health Resources: LGBTQ+ teens require mental health resources that are specifically tailored to their experiences. This includes access to counselors who are trained in LGBTQ+ issues and support groups where they can connect with peers who share similar experiences. 📣 Take Action Today: Are you ready to be a part of this transformative journey? - - - Whether you’re a small business, school, or community organization, join me in making a positive impact on the lives of LGBTQ+ teens. 💻 Visit Tsincla https://lnkd.in/eHpenwPw to learn how we can collaborate to create more inclusive and supportive environments. #LGBTQSupport #InclusiveEducation #MentalHealthMatters

Customer Relationship Manager @ Ascent | Enterprise Software Development, Data&AI, Cloud. LGBTQ+ Community Lead. Women in Innovation Community Ambassador.
March is Bi + Awareness Month -A significant initiative led by the Bisexual Resource Center The theme this year is “The Power of Bi+ Community”, which highlights the crucial role of Bi+ communities as well as the important role allies can play to support Bi+ individuals. Improving networking connections to prevent individuals feeling isolated, providing safe spaces to be heard / provide support & advice, as well as a platform for educating and advocating for healthy changes; communities plays a pivotal role. The aim of the month is to highlight the social, economic, and health disparities faced by the bisexual+ community (including bi, pansexual, fluid, and queer individuals). To improve bi+ people’s well-being by providing resources and advocating for positive change. The mission being to raise awareness about the bisexual community’s physical and mental health disparities and to promote varying levels of action / intervention (e.g. individual, organizational, community) that aim to address these disparities. Why is Bi+ Health Awareness month needed? Bisexual+ people often experience worse mental, physical, and emotional health outcomes compared to their gay, lesbian, and heterosexual peers. Bisexual+ populations are often understudied in health research and bi-specific community services are critically underfunded. Mental Health in the Bi+ Community – Bisexual Resource Center (biresource.org) The role of an ally: Believe that Bi+ people exist. Accept Bi+ sexual identities without reservation. Respect Bi+ relationships equally. Speak out against biphobia and bi+ erasure in your everyday life. Celebrate the bi+ culture! Accept the personal labels of Bi+ individuals. Remember that one person cannot be representative of all. Read up! How often are the topics around DEI, neurodiversity and accessibility exhausted without any action? 🤔 I’ve been to so many events where the same things are being spoken about year after year but no one is actually enacting any change. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of moderating a panel at the Modern Woman Show where each of the ladies were actually taking action and leading the way in their field. The biggest takeaway?! JUST LISTEN. 👂🏼 It’s the simplest thing you can do, but it’s also the most effective. ✨Listen to your employees for key words about their real state ✨Listen to how people want to be treated; don’t assume ✨Listen to other organisations who are doing it right Follow the star panel of Rachel Carrell (Koru Kids) Emma Kane Maria Grazia Zedda and Niki Wilburn-Shaw for more amazing insights on these topics. I’d like people to drop suggestions below on what action they would like to see in these areas 👇🏽 Less talk, more action. #diversity #genderequality #disability #neurodivergent #womeninbusiness #inclusion

🤔 How can we, as educators and community leaders, transform our spaces into sanctuaries of support for LGBTQ+ teens? As a NYC educator transitioning into mental health therapy… I’ve seen the profound impact of inclusivity on the mental well-being of LGBTQ+ adolescents. Fostering Acceptance: Inclusivity starts with acceptance. It’s about affirming LGBTQ+ identities, not merely tolerating them. We need to create environments where every teen feels seen, heard, and valued for who they are. This acceptance is foundational to their mental health and overall well-being. Safe Spaces and Support Systems: Building safe spaces isn’t just about physical safety; it’s about emotional and psychological safety too. This means having open, non-judgmental communication channels, and support systems that address the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ teens. Education and Awareness: Awareness is key to combating stigma and misinformation. It’s crucial to educate not just the teens but also their peers, educators, and families. Knowledge breeds empathy, and empathy fosters a supportive community. Proactive Mental Health Support: Mental health support tailored to LGBTQ+ teens is vital. It involves understanding their specific experiences and providing resources and counseling that resonate with their unique journey. Empowering Through Representation: Visibility matters. Including LGBTQ+ voices and stories in curricula and discussions helps normalize these experiences, showing teens they are not alone. - - - 📣 Take Action Today: Are you ready to make a real difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ teens? 💻 Visit https://lnkd.in/eHpenwPw to collaborate on creating inclusive, empathetic environments that nurture the mental health of our youth. #LGBTQSupport #InclusiveEducation #MentalHealthMatters

🌈💙 Celebrating Men's Health Awareness + Pride Month! Statistically, men are less likely to seek help for their health concerns, this reluctance can lead to preventable health issues and a diminished quality of life. LGBTQ+ men face unique health challenges, including higher rates of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. They are also are less likely to seek medical help due to fear of discrimination and barriers to accessing healthcare. At TelyRx, we offer prescriptions specifically tailored to men's health needs, encouraging men to take the first step towards better health by reaching out for support and care. Let's raise awareness, prioritize well-being, and embrace inclusivity together! Sources: adaa.org, aamc.org, nih.org

A culmination of years of work... Tremendously proud to be putting out this white paper on Violet benchmarks as a quality measure in collaboration with Eidos LGBTQ+ Health Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania. From the time of ideating on the Violet benchmarks, I knew that this exact research would be critical in proving out our hypothesis that inclusivity can be benchmarked and standardized. I remember in our earliest days pouring over article after article on cultural competence frameworks, research and measurement. And what we got out of it, which I always share when talking about Violet, is that there had to be a better way. It wasn't enough for clinicians to self-attest a "very true" on an "I don't discriminate" item. ❌ And equally so, we couldn't keep relying on clinicians with specific identities and lived experience to bear the burden of treating their communities. ❌ And so, the Violet benchmarks... a framework for cultural competence that was community agnostic and took into account an array of experiences a clinician would have. To my knowledge, this research is the first to show that clinicians with higher cultural competence have better outcomes across the whole patient journey. We found that patients who saw culturally competent mental health providers had better rates of matching, adherence, therapuetic alliance, depression scores and more. While not a surprise, it is more definitive evidence for the importance of prioritizing health equity and inclusive care. And of course, such gratitude to Gaurang Choksi for his continued encouragement to push the limits of existing research, our Violet research team and Jose Bauermeister for his data technical support and review!
