We are very proud finalists for the SkyTeam Aviation Challenge! A few weeks ago, we participated in one of the most meaningful sustainability initiatives in our industry - The Aviation Challenge. Together with over 20 airlines around the world, we challenged ourselves and each other to find innovative solutions to make flying more sustainable. Working closely with our partners at SimpliFlying, we launched a crowd sourcing platform, reaching millions of customers, generating thousands of ideas - hundreds of which were considered, and many implemented on our challenge flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles. This special flight marked the start of our Polar Route celebrations, as 70 years earlier we were the first airline in the world to fly over the North Pole. By reducing travel time, we were able to increase the customer experience and reduce our carbon footprint. Whilst we didn’t call it “sustainability” at the time, the focus was deeply solidified in our DNA which continues to this day. The hard work from our various teams, and from all participating airlines, will lead to a more sustainable future. Today, this work has been recognised with SAS being selected as a finalist in 3 categories! Scandinavia is undoubtedly the most climate-aware region in the world. It's only natural then that SAS - Scandinavian Airlines takes leadership in #sustainability. But how does an airline balance growth with climate goals? I *finally* spoke with Anko about the airline's turnaround, what it means to be joining SkyTeam alliance and its sustainable growth ambitions. In speaking with Anko, I could sense the passion with which he represents the interest of all the people flying on SAS - an almost 90-year-old airline brand - that has gone through a remarkable turnaround in the past couple of years. I learned from Anko that SAS’s environmental strategy is deeply rooted in the unique Scandinavian consciousness and the vital role aviation plays in the region. The airline’s approach is shaped by a culture that has long prioritised sustainability and a geography that necessitates air travel. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with SkyTeam‘s Evgenia Starkova and Heart Aerospace‘s Simon Newitt to talk about, how we make flying more sustainable. At SAS - Scandinavian Airlines we strive to be a driving force in sustainable aviation. For us, this really boils down to two things: First, it is about finetuning all the springs and levers in the clockwork that makes up an airline. When we plot a more efficient route. When we find ways to reduce the waste of food on a flight. When we wash the aircraft using much less water. That’s of course improving operational excellence – but it’s also improving sustainability. Something we together with our friends in SkyTeam are showcasing these weeks in #TheAviationChallenge where SAS is participating for the first time this year. Second, it is about pioneering what will get us from A to B. Finding, developing and - very importantly - scaling the production of new fuel types and making aviation fit into the larger puzzle of transforming the energy sector. And working closely with entrepreneurs like Heart Aerospace that engineer the development of battery powered electric aircraft. We don’t have all the answers, we don’t know exactly how to get there, and the road will bumpy and full of setbacks. But are we still 100 pct. committed to getting there? Absolutely! In light of it being #earthday we considered it pertinent to highlight the work Volanteus does for the environment. When you fly with Volanteus, we’re considered a responsible member of the private aviation industry with our carbon and emission offsetting schemes, our own ‘Book and Claim’ Sustainable Aviation Fuel scheme and our investment in the Aviation Climate Fund. Of particular note is our work on Sustainable Aviation Fuel. In today’s world, #efficiency and #sustainability are at the core of our industry, and it’s always inspiring to witness these values in action.   Last week, our partners at KLM Cityhopper took part in SkyTeam’s Aviation Challenge with a flight to Valencia, aiming to make the journey as sustainable as possible. The results were impressive: using SITA's #OptiClimb technology for takeoff, the flight burned 1% less kerosene—demonstrating how small changes can make a significant impact. SITA's OptiClimb service uses advanced data analytics to optimize aircraft takeoff, helping airlines reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. It’s a powerful tool that enhances sustainability, one flight at a time.   I would like to extend my gratitude to our partners at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for their trust and collaboration.
