NAMING YOUR BOAT: GUIDELINES Nautical Navigators, I am a creative! I love telling stories! And after writing a recent post about naming your boat, I could not resist the temptation to add a personal struggle I had in the past with the process of naming one of my first boats. I am an ex foodservice professional, restauranteur and consultant and I had the upmost pleasure working with one of the coolest concepts back in the day. The pleasure was such that I initially felt compelled to use one of that restaurant’s brand concept names to use for naming my first boat! The restaurant’s name? ‘ROASTED GARLIC’ Probably not one of the worst names to name a boat but goes completely against the concept of a nautically themed idea. I suffered through weeks of backlash from friends and internal fights and feuds with family. My mind was made up! I dumped the ‘ROASTED GARLIC’ name and went with a more traditional nautical themed name. I did sense that my boat wasn’t feeling the love and after a few seasons of mechanical issues, sent the boat packing! What’s the bottom line here? I am emphatically emphasizing this story in the hope that you will get the point to please stick with Nautically Themed Names for your beloved boat! Who has faced this dilemma? A fantastic article by Superyacht Investor Lee Stevenson at Occam Marine raises some great points within the new build phase, in particular; “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘺𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘺𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘢𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘸 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘺𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳." These state-of-the-art, luxurious, and design-focused yachts are meticulously crafted to fulfill the dreams of their owners, and rightfully so. However, as Lee points out, it is the captain and operational crew who are tasked with ensuring that everything runs smoothly and effectively! My experience as a Bosun has underscored the fact that even on the most sizable yachts, design and operational layout imperfections persist. Yet, it is our ingenuity, expertise, and hands-on experience that enable us to overcome these challenges and customize the yacht to suit both the crew and owners. Furthermore, one might argue that naval architects and designers could benefit greatly from consulting with the crew who operate the yacht tirelessly, gaining invaluable insights into the operational functionality and efficiency that we all strive for in a vessel. Another insightful article akin to this one is penned by Malcolm Jacotine, titled "Safety Through Design," which you can find in my posts section. In it, he also highlights several key points, including: "𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘣𝘺 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦, 𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤, 𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘧 𝘴𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 (𝘖𝘚𝘏) 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴?" What innovative solutions have you implemented to overcome design challenges on yachts? What advice would you give to naval architects and designers to improve operational efficiency for yachts? #yachtdesign #yachting #yachtingindustry #maritimeindustry #superyacht
"The last thing an owner wants to do on their brand new €200m yacht is listen to a captain that’s not happy with it.” Lee Stevenson, co-founder of Occam Marine with Giles Frankal, on why new-builds benefit from operational input from the outset. Definition of Excellence: The quality of being outstanding or extremely good.An action, a role or activity in which a person excels. To surpass ordinary standards. The superyacht industry demands excellence without compromise in every aspect of its operation. What motivates us as crew to be better, to want to strive to be the best we can be? and how do we achieve professional excellence? Well wanting to be “good” at what we do is a natural inclination, wanting to progress and be valued, recognised and rewarded for what we do but also to create a great working environment and be happy and fulfilled in our working lives. - We achieve excellence through taking fundamental steps in our attitude and motivation, - Through commitment to personal and professional growth, - By believing in your vision and goal even when times are tough, - By taking pride in yourself and everything you do, - By always seeking better solutions, - Through honesty, kindness and integrity, - By listening, observing and sharing knowledge, - By taking the time to understand your strengths, - By taking the time to learn to be a good team mate and leader, - Not being afraid of failure by reflecting on and learning from mistakes - And ultimately of always seeking to learn and grow. You may see your goal to achieve career success and excellence in your role as very much your own personal journey, and just for your own benefit, but the reality is when excellence is achieved, your confidence and ability filters through to all those around you, inspiring, motivating, supporting and delivering results and impact both personal and professional, throughout your team, your vessel and ultimately to create the very best Guest and Owner experience. Should #superyacht crew be living like this in 2024? Superyachts are getting BIGGER. More LUXURIOUS, more SOPHISTICATED and more EXPENSIVE.. ..with state-of-the-art: Spas Gyms Indoor/outdoor pools Cinemas Salons Indoor basketball courts (the list goes on..) So, if yachts are getting bigger, more sophisticated and expensive.. ..WHY aren't crew cabins improving at the SAME RATE? Crew are the biggest ASSET of any yacht.. ..so why are their cabins often akin to the size of a PRISON CELL? Crew WORK and LIVE with their colleagues.. ..so their personal space is extremely IMPORTANT to them. With crew longevity diminishing across the industry.. ..could crew getting "cabin fever" be a contributing factor? Should the first port of call (excuse the pun!) in promoting crew longevity START at the BUILD PHASE.. ..by designing more spacious, PRACTICAL living spaces? Following MLC implementation, it was written that.. .."seafarers have the entitlement to accommodation standards, as per tier 3 of the convention" ..which where double cabins are concerned, means 7 sq.m of floor space.. (7.5 sq.m for officers) To put this into perspective, a 2 person prison cell in the UK is circa 6.5 sq. m! For yachts built prior to MLC implementation in 2006.. ...cabins could be significantly smaller... ..the enforcement was not retrospective. Should superyacht crew be living like this in 2024 in an industry full of such abundance and where feats of amazing engineering and design are possible? And also, could such small cabins genuinely negatively impact longevity? I'd be very interested to hear from crew living on yachts of all sizes and ages. How Much Does a Superyacht Cost? Superyachts are some of the most astounding machines on the planet. Their innovation and luxury have fascinated us for decades as we’ve watched them grow in length—and cost—by the year. Today, some of the most expensive yachts in the world can measure a staggering 590 feet and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Yet the purchase price is just the beginning, and you need to have extremely deep pockets to consider owning a superyacht. Here we take a closer look at how much it costs not just to build or buy a superyacht, but to run it, as well as the price of chartering one of these magnificent vessels. The Cost of Buying a Superyacht There are 5,396 superyachts (classified as over 98 feet in length) gracing our oceans as we speak according to SuperYacht Times reporting in 2022. It’s a surprisingly small number when you consider the vast industry that supports them. Although when we look at the cost of owning a superyacht—the build or purchase price, as well as the annual ownership costs—it perhaps shouldn’t come as quite such a surprise. Superyachts are expensive! In fact, they’re one of the most expensive luxury items in the world, and some of the largest superyachts cost not just millions but hundreds of millions to build. NICE TOPIC, MY POINT OF VIEW IN CAPITAL So if yachts are getting bigger, more sophisticated and expensive WHY don't crew cabins improve at the SAME RATE? SIMPLY BECAUSE THE CREW IS ON BOARD TO WORK AND NOT TO GO ON HOLIDAY, AND IT IS TRUE TO SAY THAT THE CONDITIONS HAVE NOT IMPROVED EVEN FOR THE CREW, NOT WE SLEEP IN TRIPLE OR EVEN QUADRUPLE CABINS, AND THE CREW MESS HAD NO SPACE NOT EVEN TO WELCOME THE CREW'S GOAL. The crew is the greatest asset of any yacht.. so why are their cabins often similar to the size of a PRISON CELL? THAT IS A VERY STRONG STATEMENT, BUT UNDERSTANDABLE FOR A PERSON WHO HAS NEVER SAILED. As crew longevity decreases across the industry could "cabin fever" among the crew have contributed? NO, THE REDUCED LONGEVITY IN THE SECTOR IS SIMPLY DUE TO THE FRESH AND NONSENSE IDEA THAT JUMPING FROM ONE BOAT TO ANOTHER WITH CYCLIC FREQUENCY MAKES THE CREW MORE PROFESSIONAL AND CREATES A C.V. OF IMPACT....UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS THE YACHTING INDUSTRY OF 20XX. The first port of call (excuse the pun!) in promoting crew longevity should BEGIN in the CONSTRUCTION PHASE designing larger and more PRACTICAL living spaces? NOT REALLY, SEE MY NOTE ABOVE. .."seafarers have the right to accommodation standards, as provided for in level 3 of the convention", which for double cabins means 7 m2 of surface area (7.5 m2 for officers). To put this into perspective, a 2 person prison cell in the U.K. is around 6.5m2! WITH THE DIFFERENCE THAT THE CREW CAN LEAVE THE CABIN AND ENJOY THE COMMON SPACES AND, VERY OFTEN, THE COMFORT THAT THE YACHT OFFERS, I WOULD THEREFORE SAY THAT THE COMPARISON IS COMPLETELY OUT OF PLACE. Should superyacht crews live like this in 2024, in an industry filled with such abundance and where amazing feats of engineering and design are possible? THE CREW IS ON BOARD TO WORK AND NOT TO GO ON HOLIDAY; THEY GET UP IN THE MORNING, GET DRESSED, HAVE BREAKFAST AND GO TO WORK; THE CABIN IS USED ONLY AND EXCLUSIVELY FOR SLEEPING, THE LIFE OF THE CREW IS 60% IN COMMON/WORKING SPACES AND THE REMAINING 40% SLEEPING. Plus, could such small cabins really have a negative impact on longevity? AS MENTIONED ABOVE, BIGGER CABINS WOULD NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES; LET'S KEEP IN MIND THAT THE CREW SHOULD NOT HOST A PARTY IN THEIR CABIN OR ENTERTAIN GUESTS. WHEN THE BED IS GENEROUS AND COMFORTABLE, WHEN THE CABINETS HAVE THE RIGHT VOLUME, WHEN THERE IS A TV SCREEN AND THERE ARE SHELVES FOR PERSONAL PROPERTY, THE CREW NEEDS NOTHING ELSE. I would be very interested to know the opinion of crews living on yachts of all sizes and ages. IT IS MINE OPINION. I STARTED MY CAREER BY SLEEPING ON DECK IN THE SUMMER BECAUSE AIR CONDITIONING DID NOT EXIST; IN 30 YEARS AT SEA, I HAVE SEEN THE CREW'S LIFE CHANGE FOR THE BETTER: EXCELLENT SALARY CONDITIONS SINCE THE FIRST STEPS ON BOARD, FULL INSURANCE COVERAGE AND REGULATED WORKING HOURS. I WOULD RATHER SAY THAT 21ST CENTURY CREWS SHOULD START TO UNDERSTAND YACHTING IS A JOB AND NOT A PAID TOUR AROUND THE WORLD.
