Healthcare may not be the sector that immediately comes to mind when thinking about climate change, yet it is responsible for almost 5% of global emissions and up to 8.5% of the US carbon footprint. Big pharma giants such as GSK, AstraZeneca and Pfizer are now teaming up to work with their common suppliers and deliver economies of scale on absolute carbon emissions. Another cross-sector initiative is looking at standardizing ways of calculating emissions, with the potential to communicate carbon footprints on drug packs (similar to nutritional information provided across food and beverage). These initiatives have the potential to drive both sustainability-related ambition and competition across big pharma. Can you see a world where prescribers and patients could become true sustainability influencers? Are consumers ready to engage with the topic of climate change and sustainability when it comes to their health? Times are changing fast, and we've got our finger on the pulse. #Sustainability #BigPharma #Change #MarketResearch https://lnkd.in/e_H6tMvj

How can you be sustainable in pharma? Sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry refers to its ability to meet present needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs. To achieve this, the industry must reduce its environmental impact, conserve natural resources, and promote sustainable development. Specifically, pharmaceutical companies can take several actions to enhance sustainability: - Environment: Address high energy consumption, global supply chains, and environmental pollution related to pharmaceutical production and packaging waste. - Social Criteria: Ensure access to human and livestock medicine while maintaining food safety standards. By embracing sustainable practices, such as reducing emissions, investing in green technologies, and minimizing waste, the pharmaceutical industry can contribute to a healthier planet and long-term prosperity. Additionally, research and development efforts can combat emerging infectious diseases exacerbated by climate change. 🌿🌏 #sustainability #environment #pharma #medicine

An article in 'Nature Sustainability' on June 5, World Environment Day, highlighted the need to design ‘greener’ drugs. A recent large-scale study measured river water from 1052 locations across 104 different countries, finding that 43% of sites had drug levels exceeding safe ecological thresholds. Some places had up to 34 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) mixed into the water. https://lnkd.in/eijefKje
