A&O Shearman has bowed to pressure from other rivals upping their London junior salaries and increased its NQ rate to £150,000, an increase of £25,000 from £125,000. The firm had previously stuck with the lower legacy A&O London NQ rate, even though Shearman had paid its NQs £145,000. But following moves by key Magic Circle rivals Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Linklaters and Clifford Chance, the firm has backtracked and increased figures. Trainee salaries have also increased at A&O Shearman, to £56,000 from £50,000 for first years, and £61,000 from £55,000 for second years. The ongoing pay war for talent across all levels in the London market reveals stark differences between what UK and US firms are able to offer new recruits, or how they hold onto venerated talent. The group’s increases will also lead to other UK firms raising rates, according to Macrae partner Siobhán Lewington. “This is not a surprise at all. Addleshaw Goddard reported a 12% increase in turnover, nearing the £500 million mark, with significant revenue growth in Ireland and the Middle East.
