Addressing Maternal Overdoses in Montana The opioid crisis is severely impacting pregnant women. Since 1999, the opioid mortality rate among women has surged by over 500%, with opioid use disorder more than quadrupling. Unintentional drug overdose has become a leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women. Despite these alarming statistics, only 6% of Montana’s SUD facilities have programs for pregnant and postpartum women. At SIM-MT, we’re stepping up to address this gap with lifesaving training programs. Together, we can help mothers and their babies overcome these challenges through education and intervention. #MaternalHealth #OpioidCrisis #Healthcare #SIMMT #Education

While uterotonics are standard for preventing hemorrhage after birth, before birth, their use can introduce risks. The USAID MOMENTUM Knowledge Accelerator discusses how reducing unindicated and under-monitored uterotonic use before birth can improve outcomes. They investigate the reasons why uterotonics might be used inappropriately, drawing upon interviews with clinicians, nurses, patients, and others. They also explore how India, where 1 in 5 babies is born, can lead the way in addressing the issue. Learn more in their story deck and report: https://lnkd.in/evf3d6Kk

At BMC, we're committed to making award-winning clinical care accessible to all. Our OB/GYN department and Health Equity Accelerator have and continue to implement interventions that empower our pregnant patients to make timely decisions about their care and express agency over their bodies, such as our remote blood pressure monitoring program. From 2021 to 2022, we saw an 80% decrease in the rate of readmission due to hypertension following childbirth. BMC is advancing health justice and eliminating the race-based health equity gap in clinical areas where we see major disparities, including child and maternal health. Today is Maternal Health Awareness Day. In the U.S., 1/3 of counties are in a maternity care desert and lack access to vital obstetric care, birth centers, or certified nurse-midwives. The maternal mortality rate is high at 17.4 deaths per 100,000 live births, with 84% preventable. Black women face a staggering 4x higher mortality rate than white women. At hatch health we’re committed to widening access to maternal health care, evidence-based education, and culturally competent care for better patient outcomes and experiences. #maternalhealth #maternalhealthawarenessday

In general, there isn’t much scientific evidence about fasting with an illness like PCD, that’s why its important to trust your own judgement and speak to a medical professional if you need further guidance or if you get symptoms while fasting. The British Islamic Medical Association advise that if you become unwell during then you should stop fasting and speak to a healthcare professional. Asthma + Lung UK have put together some important information about fasting in relation to lung conditions which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/eHTdihBr The following are exempt from fasting and PCD may fall into one (this is on a case by case basis) - Children - Elderly - Ill/ have a health condition which will become worse if they fast - Travelling - pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating/post-natal bleeding. The most important thing is to make a decision that is safe and right for you. You don’t have to do this alone. You can speak to your local Imam and your healthcare professional for advice and support. The most important thing is to make a decision that is safe and right for you!

In 2020, it is estimated that nearly 1 million newborns died due to complications of preterm birth, equating to one baby every 40 seconds. Millions more survive with disabilities that affect them and their families throughout their lives. Preterm birth is the single largest killer of children under 5 years of age, accounting for more than one in three of all neonatal deaths (first month of life). Neonatal conditions are the leading cause of lost human capital in the most recent estimates of the global burden of disease, a status unchanged since 1990. Ensuring that expectant mothers receive proper antenatal care (ANC) check-ups is a key preventive step to reduce the incidence of preterm births. In India, according to the National Family Health Survey 5 (2019-21), only 70% of mothers had an antenatal check-up in the first trimester, and only 58.1% had at least four antenatal visits. This low uptake of ANC check-ups can be attributed to several issues, including a lack of awareness about the importance of ANC, insufficient human resources to conduct the check-ups, and cultural barriers. While there has been improvement in the uptake of ANC services, more efforts are required to strengthen the healthcare system to ensure that pregnant mothers avail themselves of ANC services. https://lnkd.in/g7FiVzpP

Similar to the disparities in the rates of infant deaths, the maternal mortality rate among non-Hispanic, Black or African American women was about 2.5 times greater than non-Hispanic, White women. We encourage U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to follow the recommendation in the GAO's report that they ensure the Maternal Health Blueprint's performance measurement strategy follows key practices; and that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention establish quantitative targets for the Perinatal Quality Collaborative program's near-term goals. https://lnkd.in/en5_EXwA #maternalhealth #birthequity #healthequity #infanthealth #birthjustice
