Stepping into a New Role as a Facility Manager: The Importance of Understanding Mission, Vision, and Value Proposition.
As you embark on your journey as the newly appointed Facility Manager for the company you’ve always wanted to work for, overseeing all facility-related assets and activities, I find it paramount for you to begin with a thorough analysis of the organization’s mission, vision, and value proposition; What I call “The Corporate Existence”. Why is this initial step so crucial? Let's break it down:
Understanding the Business's Core: The mission and vision statements of a company are not just words; they are the guiding stars that define the purpose and the strategic direction of the organization. A clear understanding of these elements helps align the management of physical assets and facilities with the broader business objectives. This alignment is critical as it ensures that every decision made in facilities management directly supports the overarching goals of the company.
In this discussion, I will refer to the Ghana Airport Company as an illustrative example. The company's mission statement declares: "To Provide World-Class Facilities and Services for the Benefit of Our Stakeholders." This mission, particularly pertinent to the aviation industry and underscored by the keywords "World-Class Facilities and Services" and "Stakeholders," essentially articulates that the Ghana Airports Company is committed to delivering exemplary baggage handling and control systems, superior security screening, outstanding washroom facilities, and optimal check-in procedures. It further pledges the finest departure and arrival experiences, efficient landing systems, and the elimination of airport-related flight delays, catering to all passengers, airlines, government, and other stakeholders involved.
The vision statement of the company asserts: "To Position Ghana as a Preferred Aviation Hub and Leader in Airport Business in West Africa." This vision translates to an operational mandate where airport managers are strategically tasked with attracting major airlines to use Ghana as their West African hub. It involves enhancing airport services by incorporating a modern Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility that will serve the sub-region, fostering relationships between airlines and local service providers for catering and accommodation, increasing annual passenger traffic, and utilizing the airport’s assets to develop additional revenue streams.
As the newly appointed head of facilities at the Ghana Airport, it is imperative that you first comprehensively understand how the various facilities contribute to achieving this mission and vision at every touch point. This foundational knowledge is crucial for effectively aligning facility management practices with the strategic objectives of the organization and how you can begin to define what your gap analysis will entail in designing your strategy.
