Thinking of offering your software as on-premises in addition to SaaS ❔ Consider the following four aspects 🎯 💲 The additional cost of having an on-prem offering can be significant. Give the decision the same attention that you would to investing in a new product line. 🏭 Offering SaaS and on-prem requires different mindsets, e.g., in development, packaging, deploying, documenting, releasing, monitoring, support, incident management, updates, and contracts. It's not just money; it's also how your organization is set up. 💹 Some efforts may scale very differently compared to SaaS, e.g., if your on-prem offering includes setup and monitoring for your B2B customers, there will be additional manual effort with every customer and every update. A simple cost coverage check is good, but it may not tell the full story. Are there enough of the needed people available on the market? How fast can you hire and train them? 👨💻 If you do decide to go for both on-prem and SaaS, have mostly the same people be responsible for both versions with clearly stated goals. This will get them to optimize for both use-cases and implicitly minimize the efforts and costs. E.g., having many micro-services may be cool for SaaS and CI/CD, where you only operate one version of the product at any time, but may be a pain for on-prem, where different customers are running different versions and your ability to make changes depends on preset windows. #cto #ceo #technology #saas #onpremises #onpremise
