Learn and stay informed. 📚✨ It is our duty and responsibility. 🤝💡 Legal Monuments for Srebrenica in the Hague ⚖️🏛️ Conclusion 📝: Monuments are objects built to remember and show respect for a person or group of people. 🕊️🕯️ Court judgments thus play an important role in urging us to remember and show respect for the victims of the tragedy of Srebrenica, but these legal monuments need the help of monuments from other disciplines, such as history and the arts. https://lnkd.in/ebnjT2uY

Interesting developments. It is essential to note that the UK government has seen value in allowing foreign judges to sit on the Privy Council to adjudicate appeals originating from their jurisdictions due to their appreciation for the unique jurisprudence emanating from those jurisdictions. On the other hand, many Caribbean islands opt to keep the Privy Council as their final appellate Court in order to maintain distance of the judiciary, despite regional appellate Court alternatives.
The UK government has approved a proposal to have judges from countries served by the Privy Council sit on appeals to the judicial committee. 📈 As Lord Reed, president of the UK Supreme Court and the judicial committee of the Privy Council, notes: "Having the benefit of the opinion of a judge with direct experience of local conditions can only enhance the quality of the Privy Council's decision-making." 📖 The most important legal issues have, for centuries, been determined solely by people in London who had little practical knowledge of, and had often never even visited, the societies for which they were making the most momentous decisions. 👩🏽⚖️ For countries served by the Privy Council, this development preserves the benefit of having their most difficult legal issues considered by some of the most experienced judges in the common law world, while making the process considerably less anachronistic. We have little doubt that the news will be welcomed in the jurisdictions that retain the right of appeal to the Privy Council, in which Dentons practises, including #BVI, #Cayman, #Anguilla, #Antigua, #Grenada, #Jamaica, #Mauritius, #Montserrat, #Nevis, #StKitts, #StVincent and #Trinidad.

'Retiring Milord' - This poem captured my heart today: An introspection into our politics, our judicial profession and the delicate balance between the two. Can't help but ask though, if my politics doesn't align with the objectives of the Constitution or the Independence of Judiciary, would either of the two (Politics or Judiciary ) be a good choice for me? Am I an actual asset to my country? Has the line blurred? What if my politics reflects in the judicial decisions I make? Am I not accountable for the quantum of impact it generates because common people look up to the judiciary? https://lnkd.in/gsqQDYUc #theleafletbulletin #poem #politics #democracy #freedomofspeech #writing #law #constitution #legal #legalnews #knowledge #understanding #criticalthinking

🤔 Do we all live on the same planet? Asset Publishing weighs in on a topic that carries many tensions positing that "Nature has legal rights - it is not property." Rights of Nature (RoN) on the other hand, enshrine rights for nature in some form of Charter, for example in EU law or in a written constitution, that provides civil society with a primary role as watchdog providing oversight of the environment and where necessary the ability to challenge decisions that are regarded as contrary to the protection of nature. In essence enabling the Court of Justice of the EU to have a greater environmental role than at present. It butresses well with the former #GARN The late French Philosopher Bruno Latour (2018) seemed to understand the tensions and contradictions that embody global political action today insofar as our relationship go to that part of the earth that comprises the crust and the atmosphere, where we spend most of our time and resources... when he said "Belonging to the Land/Territory is the phenomenon most in need of rethinking and careful description; learning new ways to inhabit the earth is our biggest challenge. Bringing us down to earth is the task of politics today" 📕 Given the track record of the #UN #COP Climate Change Conferences hosted to date, do they? Have a read of this highly challenging topic below including the varied comments... to see why we need a seismic shift in our thinking about how best to protect the environment in our spatial development.
