New Neuroscience Article! This is the last part (Part II) in the two-part series on PTSD and intrusive memories, discussing how a common and well-loved visuospatial game, Tetris, can reduce the presence of the core clinical symptom. As discussed in an earlier article, psychological trauma resulting from threat to life or serious injury from events such as vehicle accidents or assault, among others, can result in development of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The core clinical feature is intrusive memories, where memories of the event involuntarily intrude into a person’s consciousness after being triggered by environmental cues, resulting in extreme emotional distress. Two of the most common and effective treatments for PTSD include trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Recent research has unveiled fascinating insights into how psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, affects the brain. A study conducted by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine tracked brain changes in healthy adults before, during, and after taking psilocybin. The findings highlight significant disruptions in brain network connectivity, particularly in the default mode network (DMN), which is associated with our sense of self and introspective thinking. Psilocybin caused a threefold increase in changes to brain networks compared to methylphenidate, commonly known as Ritalin. This desynchronization was most pronounced in the DMN, leading to temporary alterations in the perception of time, space, and self. Interestingly, these changes persisted for weeks, suggesting a potential mechanism for psilocybin’s therapeutic effects, such as its reported benefits in treating depression and PTSD. These findings provide a neurobiological explanation for psilocybin’s mind-altering effects and lay the groundwork for developing psilocybin-based therapies. The study underscores the drug’s ability to induce both acute and lasting changes in brain function, which could be harnessed to alleviate mental distress under controlled conditions. Just finished reading a fascinating paper on the anterior mid-cingulate cortex (aMCC) and its contribution to achieving goals. The authors provide compelling evidence on the aMCC's role in integrating signals from various brain systems to predict energy requirements for attention, memory, and physical movement. This research has significant implications for understanding educational achievement, exercise, successful aging, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Excited to Share My Research Presentation at the Society for Neuroscience Conference! I had the honor of presenting our research on "Maternal and Paternal Preconception Alcohol Exposures Influence Adult Offspring Drinking Behaviors, Locomotor Activity, and Compulsivity" at the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) Conference! This work is particularly close to my heart as it addresses Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), which rank among the most prevalent and preventable neurodevelopment disorders globally. Our findings shed light on how preconception alcohol exposures—both maternal and paternal—can influence offspring behavior in adulthood, offering new insights into the long-term impact of alcohol on brain development and behavior.
