I joined the Reservist Servicewomen's focus group tonight, facilitated by Abigail Wood & Hilary Engward of Anglia Ruskin University. It was really great to connect with other former & serving #ReservistServicewomen. There's no academic research relating to the needs of this population in the UK at the moment & scant research internationally. The conversation was varied & we didn't get through all the questions. But meeting others was so validating. We exist. I wanted to talk about the transitions that Reservist Servicewomen go through all throughout their careers. Not just at the end of service, but the transition of being a worker & reservist, changing out of civilian clothes & into uniform & back again. Readjusting to life after operations & exercises. Those bloody GI Jane/Private Benjamin/Combat Barbie jokes we (perhaps grimacingly) endure. Talking about the challenges of arranging childcare, how for me, who served both as a #SingleParent & with a partner who also served, this changed & impacted on my #CareerAdvancement. I wanted to talk about how the TA at one point was my main source of income, being topped up by #IncomeSupport as a lone parent. How people scoff at me, a femme-presenting person, that I served in the military at all & laugh harder or dismiss my insights further on learning I was *only* a Reservist. A career I sacrificed a hell of a lot to have for 9 years - 9 years that gave me a sense of being & purpose actually. And have highly informed & influenced the 10 years since. There's a huge amount of research that could be done. I hope the focus group shapes some of that, but that more of these discussions happen. It was lovely to meet people who I didn't have to explain some of the nuances to that most others don't understand. So, it was a productive evening even if we didn't get through the pre-set questions.

😲 Winston Churchill is believed to have made a grave tradeoff decision that cost the British 500 lives 🤨 How forgiving are you if you had to decide on such a tradeoff that costs so many innocent lives ❓Now, what if Churchill could argue that his tradeoff eventually led to the end of WWII, are you now more forgiving? 🤔 Would we be living happier lives if we heard other people's perspectives—not necessarily agreeing with them, but simply to see where they're coming from? 💡 Here are my thoughts on this: https://lnkd.in/gN5_h4vn #UniLife #phdlife #phdjourney #phdstudent #StudentSuccess #Instagood #UniversityLife #CareerDevelopment #graduateschool #motivationalquotes #StudentLife #PersonalGrowth #doctorallife #academiclife #gradschool #CareerAdvice #gradstudent #gradschoollife #Inspiration #academia #FinancialFuture #CollegeStudents #college #CareerGoals #LifeHacks #university #jobmarket #anxiety #upskill #CareerProspect

It is essential to recognize that well-being extends beyond physical health. Mental health plays a significant role in overall quality of life, and that’s where Mental Health First Aid Training comes in. 🤝 Why Mental Health First Aid? Early Intervention: Just as we provide first aid for physical injuries, mental health first aid equips us to recognize signs of distress and offer initial support. Reducing Stigma: By promoting open conversations about mental health, we break down stigma and encourage veterans and their families to seek help without fear of judgment. Empowering Communities: When more people are trained in mental health first aid, our communities become better equipped to support veterans and their families in crisis. Get Involved: Attend our upcoming Mental Health First Aid Training on May 21, 2024, at Cumberland County VFW Post 6018. Together, let’s create a compassionate and informed network that uplifts our veterans. #MentalHealthMatters #VeteransSupport #BeTheBridge

📢Navigating Special Education when Retiring: 1. Transfer Educational Records: ✨Ensure all your child’s educational records, including their Individualized Education Program (IEP), evaluations, and progress reports, are up-to-date and complete. ✨Request physical copies of these records from the current school to provide to the new school district. 2. Research and Connect with New Schools: ✨Research potential school districts and their special education services in the area where you will be relocating and contact the new school's department. 3. Initiate the Transition Process: ✨ Notify your current school and the new school about your upcoming move as soon as possible and work to coordinate the transition. 4. Understand Legal Rights and Resources: ✨ Familiarize yourself with the special education laws and policies in your new state or school district, as there can be differences. ✨ Reach out to local parent advocacy groups, the Parent Training and Information Center (PTI), or Special Education Advisory Councils for additional support and resources. 5. Update Medical and Support Services: ✨ If your child receives related services (e.g., speech therapy, occupational therapy), ensure you have referrals and records from current providers to transition those services seamlessly. ✨Update your DEERS and TRICARE information and ensure your child’s medical and support needs are covered in your new location. 6. Schedule a New IEP Meeting: ✨ As soon as possible after the move, request an IEP meeting with the new school to review and possibly update your child's IEP. 7. Stay Organized and Document Everything: ✨ Keep a binder or digital folder with all important documents, contacts, and notes related to your child's education and services. Download our Special Education & EFMP Binder here: https://lnkd.in/eNi_hZnd 8. Visit the New School: ✨ If possible, arrange a visit to the new school with your child before the first day. This can help ease any anxiety and allow both you and your child to become familiar with the new environment. What would you add? #SpecialEducation #EFMP #MilitaryChildren #MilitaryFamilies #Retiring

Today we celebrate the historical milestone of Juneteenth, marking the emancipation of enslaved black Americans in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865, that Union Army General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived to formally inform the enslaved Black and African American people of Galveston, Texas that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them. This day holds immense significance as a symbol of liberation and the ongoing fight for equality. We at Operation Child Care Project understand the importance of supporting our military community, which is why we strive to bridge the gap between the demand and availability of child care services through data-driven decision-making, authentic storytelling, and advocacy. On this Juneteenth, we celebrate the strength of our military families and recognize the historical significance of this day in the fight for freedom and equality. Together, let's continue to support one another and build a brighter future for all.
