Why some windows start fogging up over time?
Let’s break it down. First, let’s understand the structure of insulated glass. Between two pieces of glass, there’s an aluminum spacer bar with small, evenly spaced holes—these holes are for airflow, and the little black dots you see are the vents. Then, we add desiccant, those yellow tiny beads you see inside, which are also called molecular sieves. This creates a sealed frame using an aluminum spacer bar.
Next, we apply the first layer of butyl sealant, that black layer you see between the two pieces of glass. After that, we apply a second layer of silicone sealant all around the edges to fully seal the glass. This creates an airtight layer of air between the two panes.
Now, why does fogging happen? It's because the seal of the insulated glass isn't tight enough, allowing moisture to get inside. As the sun heats up the glass, the moisture turns into vapor, which creates the fogging effect. High-quality insulated glass is made using large machines that apply the sealants automatically. But if you end up with glass from a small workshop where it’s sealed by hand, leaks and fogging are pretty common.
The issue comes down to the quality of the butyl and silicone sealants, and how they’re applied. So how can you tell the difference? First, press on the sealant with your finger—good sealant will be flexible, while poor-quality sealant can be peeled off if you press hard enough. Second, check if the sealant around the edges is applied evenly and fully without gaps. Finally, see if there’s any butyl sealant inside.
