Did you know that the key to preventing pregnancy hypertension, childhood obesity, and managing diabetes could be found in your kitchen? Pregnancy Hypertension Extra zinc and calcium three months before conception can prevent hypertension during pregnancy, safeguarding both mother and child. A Columbia University study underscores the critical role of nutrition even before life begins. Childhood Obesity Syracuse University found that fish oil in male mice's diets led to lower body weights in their offspring. This is the first study focusing on paternal influence, highlighting a groundbreaking approach to combat childhood obesity. Managing Obesity with Olives Researchers at Virginia Tech discovered elenolic acid in olives that lowers blood sugar and promotes weight loss. Twin Health, a Silicon Valley startup with an AI-based dynamic model of each individual's unique metabolism, provides members individualized, precise, timely guidance across nutrition, sleep, activity and stress, announced a $50M funding raise this week. WellTheory, a virtual care platform focused on autoimmune diseases, announced its first employer partnership with Maven Clinic. WellTheory’s enterprise offering aims to deliver evidence-based interventions that manage, prevent and reverse symptoms that keep employees sick and costs high. Starting today, Maven employees now have free access to WellTheory’s platform that offers evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle coaching to reduce autoimmune symptoms. There are more than 100 different known autoimmune diseases. They affect about 15% of the workforce. Autoimmune diseases also disproportionately impact women and minorities. The associated cost of autoimmune diseases has become a significant portion of the rising cost of healthcare in the U.S. “We really don’t have a sense of the magnitude of the undiagnosed population as well, that’s a lot harder to quantify,” WellTheory co-founder and CEO Ellen Rudolph told Fierce Healthcare. Maven's nearly 600 employees will be able to go through a clinically validated eligibility survey to determine if they are a right fit for WellTheory. Those who are will have access to WellTheory’s 12-month flagship program, including live 1:1 video sessions and unlimited messaging with WellTheory’s care team for longitudinal care. Dexcom finally got an FDA approval for an over-the-counter CGM! This is a big deal because it will make the technology available to everyone, and it'll be relevant to a wider population versus a narrow clinical one, it will lead to scale economies, that will drive down the cost of CGMs and make them more consumer-friendly. It'll open the door for more health tech companies, big and small, consumer-focused and specialty, to incorporate it into their products and maybe even first party experiences. I previously led product for Levels and have been intimately familiar with CGMs for close to a decade, and the FDA approval will be a game-changer for CGMs and a template for other continuous biomarker wearable sensors that can directly or indirectly measure other analytes in the body to create closed feedback loops to improve human health. This is just the beginning, and I am really excited about bio-observability and intervention loops. I'll write more about this in future posts. Many physicians and even regulators have long held the view that CGMs are only appropriate for people with diabetes, primarily a small subsegment; Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes that is hard to control. To put this in perspective, this is like saying you should only buy a bathroom scale if you are already obese! Blood sugar dysregulation for most of the population is gradual and due to poor eating habits from high sugar and processed carbs in ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, etc, exacerbated by a lack of exercise to soak up glucose by muscle through non-insulin-dependent pathways. It is also very much reversible for many, by seeing and understanding the root cause you can reverse it. This is basic control theory, the more accurately you can observe a system the more likely it is that you can control it. Like a scale can give you feedback on your weight, a CGM, can give you granular personalized feedback on foods or behaviors that are causing elevated blood sugar, which can lead to blood sugar dysregulation, and all sorts of bad things that you don't want like weight issues, low energy, diabetes, other chronic diseases and more broadly, cellular energy dysfunction that can affect a lot of things in your body. So, in short, this is really big news and hopefully the start of a wider proliferation of technologies to counter our chronic disease epidemic! As CGMs become more accessible, the market will likely consolidate around companies that offer the best content, community, and software. This will raise the bar for CGM software companies, and the need to invest in those areas to stay alive. Big congrats and thanks to Dexcom, Jake Leach, Matt Dolan and the team for pushing to make this a reality. I know you've had a much bigger vision of what CGMs can do, for a long time! You can note meals or behaviors like exercise, sauna, sleep, or stressful events on the glucose chart to see how they impact your glucose.
