Something interesting is happening in the solid conservatory roof market at the moment. It continues to be a sector of the marketplace that is buoyant, but the designs that we’re seeing coming through are becoming increasingly complicated. Just as traditional conservatory roofs developed from straight forward designs, into more complicated shapes and plans, the same thing seems to be happening with solid roofs. It makes sense with an increased awareness of the product among homeowners and the subsequent desire to utilise the benefits of a solid roof in a way that is unique and tailored to their own home. The replacement roof market is still going strong as well but it does take some ingenuity and ‘thinking outside of the box’ to make these projects work. Last puzzle: Corporate memory... The re-invention of the wheel is ever with us. The reason for singling out the the round tower at Onehoue in Norfolk is because the experiment with resin grouting that was conducted here produced so many interesting lessons that are largely lost to the current generation of architects and conservators. It is far from the only example...see what you can find out about the consolidation experiment at Steetley Chapel or the long term behaviour of the "lime method" at Crowland Abbey. This puzzle (20/06/2024) Here is an image of a west country waggon vault (Tisbury). The medieval popularity of such extensive arch bracing probably derived from an abundance of short and bent oak (as opposed to long and straight)...but here comes the puzzle: Many (if not most) waggon vaults have been ceiled with lath and plaster: When was this done? How many successive times has it been done on the same roof?

Time Horizon; visiting the sculptures of Anthony Gormley in Norfolk. It wasn’t immediately apparent but all 100 sculptures are located along the same horizontal datum within the grounds of the estate. It’s just the landscape levels that change, giving the impression that the sculptures are raised above or sunk into the earth.
